More light in the boot!

I was getting tired of not having enough light in my mini's boot.
There is only one light housing on the left side and it simply does not do the trick for me. I can barley see what I am looking at sometimes because of the poor light coming from only the one side.
So I hit up Realoem.com, got the part number for the light housing, ordered one up from my dealer and wired in the same light housing into the opposite side of the boot, making the lighting equal and much better see things.

they may have the same part numbers but MINI seems to have updated their light housings to some sealed ones with much better plastic.

I just cut an equal sized hole on the other side and it popped right in!
I ran the wires under the cloth/plastic stuff, and spliced them with the oem wires.

I want to get some LED diode chip/bulb things to replace the bulbs in the two lights, does anybody know where i should get them?

There are loads of places on the web. You can do a search on LEDs or marine LEDs since boats, especially sailboats have needs for LEDs to keep battery drain low. Here is one link but you can also check out some local stores like Radio Shack and perhaps Walmart or Target.

You can order whole kits specifically designed for the MINI here.

I purchased a great one at www.v-leds.com and put it in my boot. I purchased http://www.v-leds.com/Interior-LED/D...08401-1-2.html (their part number is 194_2_HPF_W_5K) and best of all you get two in the package! Super bright and they are designed for bulbs that sit sideways just like these. I can post pictures if you want.

The same vendor has a couple of options to go even brighter:

With the super bright hardware, one side should work for those of us not talented (or brave).

Would it be simple to replace the stock bulb with LEDs? Or, perhaps, to replace the entire fixture?

It is sooo easy, all you have to do us pull the fixture out, and just pull the bulb out of its housing, its only held in with metal prongs.

Yeah, it takes like 10 seconds. First I pulled the plastic housing away from the trunk liner. Then I disconnected the wire from the plastic housing. The connector for the wire just unhooks. Then I waited for the bulb to cool. I removed the bulb with my hands. Inserted the replacement. Reconnected the connector and put the fixture back in place.

Yes, one super bright is enough. But I love the idea of having two fixtures.

Two lights is great, but I am no electrician. I have no clue how one goes about tapping into the electrical system and have great concern about doing so while still under warranty. I think I am destined for the next two years ten months to settle for a brighter single light.

Excellent "oem" mod. I often find my light blocked by stuff so having a redundant light on the other side would have been helpful.
