I am thinking that the instructors are thinking the same thing.

Not that they are jealous but that they are happy to be in Hawaii this week.

Low temperature overnight was about 56 degrees which is the coldest in the last few months and high today about 80 and sunny.

This weekend will be partly sunny high of 79, lows of 58.
58 is pretty cold for us but by 9-10am it's 68
Some will say 68 is cold.

Our event starts on Saturday so if you jump on the plane now you can make it here to drive.

Charlie, what are you jealous about...you still have mods to do
Or is it just the 80 deg temps you are looking for

minihune - hope it goes well and take good care of my friend (slinger, in the white mini), he might be suffering from track withdrawals

Track withdrawal?

Unfortunately despite the fair weather, we have no track or dragstrip on Oahu.
Seems a shame but it's true.

I'm sure slinger will do just fine, I might be driving my MINI or one or more of the days.

Have fun. Got a little too much sun today.

I am not sure I am much of an autox person. Thinking about ways to get back onto the track perhaps next year.

Too much sun

We haven't seen the sun in about 10 days around here.

Slinger, we know how you like autoX, but think if it as "fine tuning" the mind so when you do get back to the track you will be ready. Besides, when was the last time you got the chance to mash the throttle and not have worry about getting picked up? That had to feel good Glad to hear you did get out and had fun.

It was sunny all three days, highs of about 80 and today was breezy.

We finished our Evo School today and it was a big success. Too bad more MINI owners did not attend. It was quite a good time and all of the four mainland instructors were experienced and helpful.

Course 1
Basic review for car control and driving an autocross with good technique. Good for any novice or experienced driver. Good review for those that have taken other driving classes and want a refresher. You drive about 25 runs of about 40-45 seconds each on a flat paved parking lot marked with cones.

Course 2
More advanced, it requires completion of Course 1 to attend. You do similar but more technical autocross course in either direction (start becomes the finish and vice versa) with little or no preparation/course walk. You need to adjust and think on the fly as you go but are expected to still drive well. Emphasis is on driving while looking ahead to anticipate what is next so that you are ready when it happens.

Challenge School
Apply what is learned from previous days, drive a technical course in either direction, then have your windshield taped off to block your view of the 25 feet in front of your car while you drive on a course you have not walked or driven on before. This forces you to look ahead, look to the sides, and use peripheral vision to navigate. Typically the drivers did very well hitting as few as one cone over 5 runs and being accurate and fast. Most drivers fumbled around for the first run or two but by the third run and on they were driving normally fast. Drivers did this exercise alone with the instructor watching. Then the final part of the day was an autocross challenge, you drive the course in your car as fast as possible, then the instructor tries to better your time in as few trys as possible, then you try to beat them and so on. If your time is so good your instructor cannot beat you then another instructor will try. A few of our drivers were unbeatable no matter which instructor drove. Of the four mainland instructors three were SCCA national champions in Solo or ProSolo events and many had been teaching Evo School for 10 to 15 years, driving competitively for 15 to 35 years plus.

The instructors had a good time, they liked being in Hawaii and worked easily with our students.

There were some new drivers that took Courses 1 and 2 and one that took all three days. They all improved greatly and were told that the best way to learn how to drive well is to take the courses before trying to autocross on their own. Fewer bad habits are acquired and more early success can be achieved.

If you missed out on the Evo School and live in Hawaii, you can save the first two sundays in July 2013 for a Autocross Driving school at SCCA Hawaii's test and tune event Aloha Stadium lower parking lot.

We will have instructors in the morning for novice drivers and you drive all day, work one heat. Street tires are fine.

Don't forget about July's driving school and test and tune SCCA event at Aloha Stadium.

Likely it will be two years before the EVO school makes it back to Oahu.

There is some early talk that Kauai will have an Evo school in July of this year- it's being planned, not certain.

I have updated this old thread with 2015 dates.

SCCA Hawaii region will be sponsoring the same three day Evolution Driving School over the Martin Luther King weekend Jan, 17-19 2015 at Aloha Stadium lower parking lot.

Each day there will be a more advanced phase.

If you have no experience and want to learn basic car control and more then the first day, Saturday Jan 17 is Phase 1 class. It lasts all day and costs about $280 per driver.

Two drivers can share a car if needed.

For more info see-

Yes, if you are in hawaii you should plan to attend any or all of the days.

To do phase 2 you need to have done phase 1 first.

You don't need a MINI or a sportscar to benefit from the driving school.

A rental car will work fine. You'll need closed shoes and a SNELL rated helmet M2000 or later.

Hope to see you there. Sign up will be online and I will post when it will become open probably about October of this year.

This is the perfect driving school event for you new or soon to be F56 3rd gen MINI owners.

You don't know what you'll be missing. Learn car control in a safe environment.

Online registration will be open in the late summer/ early Fall 2014.

Save the dates for the Evolution Driving School at Aloha Stadium lower parking lot-

MLK weekend January 2015

http://www.evoschool.com/

It will be three days of high performance driving school with mainland instructors (lots of competitive driving experience).

SCCA Hawaii has held the Evo school twice before and it always sells out so once you see that registration online is open you have to act fast. We expect that registration will be open in late summer to early Fall.

To register online check back later at-
http://www.evoschool.com/shop/index....oduct_list&c=1

Various levels or phases will be offered with a more advanced class each successive day. No experience needed and any family car will do. As long as it is not an SUV or other car with high center of gravity. Rental works work fine.

The goal of each class is to let you try driving under safe conditions and learn what the limits of your car feel like. You learn car control which carries over to any car you drive since the principles are the same. In addition, the instructors will challenge you to push your comfort zone for a taste of what performance driving feels like.

The MINI (all models) is ideally suited for this type of school, even the Countryman can be used. If you have a teen driver (not totally new) or you have a newish car you want to learn on that would be great.

Post here if you have any questions.

Keep this event in mind if you are interested in car control or learning about performance driving. Great for spouses, experienced teens, or other family members that drive the MINI (any model).

You gain confidence and have some fun driving in a safe environment with experienced instructors that have taught these classes all over the country.

Sign up will be online first come first served in late summer.

Hope to see you there.

The Hawaii Evolution Driving School is just around the corner.

Jan 17-19, 2015 at Aloha Stadium lower parking lot sponsored by SCCA Hawaii.

Rough cost estimated at $250 per driver for Days 1 and 2 and $135 for Day 3 Test and tune (practice autocross and instruction).

On Day 1 there will be a Phase 1 course which is best for new or novice autocross drivers or anyone that wants to learn basic car control plus more.

Day 2 is Phase 2 course which requires attendance at Phase 1 and builds on the skills learned. There are four different autocross courses to practice driving with instruction.

Day 3 is open to all drivers and is a basic test and tune day. An autocross course is setup and you practice driving it with help available from the Evo School instructors.

On Day 1 and 2 each driver can expect to have about 24 runs on course while in Day 3 it could be as much as 30 runs. In our normal day long event we have 4 runs with some fun runs available. As a result these driving school days pack in 6+ months of competitive driving in one day.

In a few days the online registration will be opened and anyone can sign up. A $15 weekend membership to SCCA will allow participation and coverage for insurance.

Closed shoes and a Snell rated M2000 or later helmet is required, free loaner helmets are available first come first served. One can may be shared by up to two drivers for each day.

Race tires and modifications are not necessary, a stock MINI would be fine and any of the various model MINIs are appropriate.

Evolution Phase 1 Driving School
This program is great for anyone from seasoned veterans to complete novice, and features 24 runs with our team of National Caliber instructors.
This is the first step in autocross education where all students start. The daylong course builds students skills level via introducing new ideas to improve one's times. Students both ride and drive (using their own cars) with Evolution's trained, professional drivers (most of which are current or past National Solo Champions) to learn where they are fast and where they need to improve. Small student teacher ratio of insures quality instruction time.
Combined with race proven skills, concepts, and techniques, this course will improve the performance of all drivers on the both road and the track. Even experienced driver’s benefit from the Phase 1 course as a refresher for those things they’ve forgotten over the years or perhaps never learned. No matter what type of car you drive, the Phase 1 skills will improve your overall driving abilities.
The following is a schedule for the days event:
7:00am Site Opens
7:00am Tech Opens
8:30am Drivers Meeting
9:00am Instructed Sessions Begins
12:30pm Working Lunch
1:00pm Instructed Session Continue
4:30pm Wrap-up Meeting
Note: Two driver cars are welcome. Students will also be required to work course during part of the day.
Evolution Phase 2 Driving School
This program is great for anyone who has taken our Phase One, and is looking to take their driving to the next level. This program features 24 runs on four different course configurations, and all with our team of National Caliber instructors.
Building upon the skills learned in Phase 1, the Phase 2 Evolution Drivers School takes the driver into new areas of mental race preparation, allowing the Phase 1 skills to be applied as second nature. Various driving exercises are conducted throughout the day to improve the driver’s visual and mental imaging of the course, resulting in quicker lap times.
This course has proven itself to reinforce the importance of Phase 1 skills and transferring those skills to every autocross course you may encounter. The Phase 2 course design is not the same as used in Phase 1 and generally has higher speed sections.
The following is a schedule for the days event:
7:00am Site Opens
7:00am Tech Opens
8:30am Drivers Meeting
9:00am Instructed Sessions Begins
12:30pm Working Lunch
1:00pm Instructed Session Continue
4:30pm Wrap-up Meeting
Note: Phase 2 students must first have completed the Phase 1 Program. As in Phase 1, students use their own cars and two driver cars are welcome. As usual, students will also be required to work course during part of the day.
Evolution Test-N-Tune
The Evolution Performance Driving School with the help of the Hawaii Region of the SCCA will be holding an open Test and Tune at Aloha Stadium on Monday January 19th. This program is open to all, and will run a three heat format, with a morning and afternoon session. Each participant will be required to work one heat in both the morning and afternoon session. If you are not working, the course will be open for you to drive. (Example: Work Heat One/Run Heats 2 & 3. Both morning and afternoon)
Event Schedule:
8:30am Drivers Meeting
9:00am Heat One
10:00am Heat Two
11:00am Heat Three
12:00pm Lunch
1:00pm Heat One
2:00pm Heat Two
3:00pm Heat Three
4:00pm Clean
Past Evolution Test and Tunes have netted 30+ runs per driver, so be sure to bring plenty of tire!
