is "MNNI" the DMV's "abbreviation" for MINI???

So I just got back from the DMV, where I was told that "MNNI" is apparently their abbreviation for "MINI". Is this true???

My insurance company said they wouldn't insure my brand new MINI because the DMV's records didn't match theirs... The VIN number was correct, but they had never heard of a "MNNI"...

WHO is the crazy one here??

the DVM, either they did it wrong, or...they are crazy for abbreviating a word, with an abbreviation of the same length as the original

I'm with State Farm in Virginia, and my insurance paperwork says "MNNI" as well. I haven't looked at my title to see what the DMV used.

Same here

Same deal in Minnesota-My Minnesota Certificate of Title reads "MNNI" for Make and "2H COO" for Model/Body. I use USAA and got no hassle & at least they spelled it MINI!

It could very well be that "MINI" is still assigned to the classic Minis, and a new abbreviation was required for the BMW-produced cars.

We're in Portsmouth, VA and our insurance is Nationwide.

Nationwide: MINI Cooper
DMV: BMW Cooper

Yep, I lived in MN when I bought my Mini, and when I got the title, I saw that and asked the clerk if it was a mistake - or if they seriously abbreviated a 4 letter word with a 4 letter abbreviation. She said she knew it was silly, but indeed "MNNI" is the abbreviation for "MINI".

I went through the exact same thing with the Oregon DMV. I got a letter saying there was a descrepency between my insurance and DMV records. However, neither could tell me what was actually wrong. Since the VIN match on both, I left it alone.

I believe this IS the correct reason for it.

Ha! I also noticed that mine says MNNI when I got my registration! I thought about calling them up, but insurance didn't seem to mind, so I let it slide.

DMV abbreviations often vary by state, and as seen in the posts above, don't have any relevance to what other industries and states use.

In Missouri, mine says "MINI".

Is the new Veyron a BGGATTI? I still don't see how this makes sense. It's still the same company, they've just been bought by BMW, right? And it's still the same model name. I doubt that new VLLKSWAGEN Beetles have this issue.

I know I'm overthinking this, but I just don't get this explanation.

MNNI is not an abbreviation. It's longer.

Just another thing that makes Alabama behind the times. Mine is listed MINI as make and Cooper as model. Are we ever going to catch up with the rest of the country?

Safeco Insurance here- under make and model on the in-vehicle insurance card: MNNI. Must be something to it industry-wide.

MNNI is not an abbreviation. It's longer.

Volkswagen is abreviated as VW at the DMV.

Only some classic's could be labeled with MINI. Others would be BRLY (or something like that) for British Leyland, or ROVR for Rover, since they all made the Mini in some variation at some point in time.

It could be any of the manufacurers of the car over its production run:
BMC
Austin Rover
British Leyland
MG Rover, etc, etc etc.
