2013 MINI Cooper Hardtop, <100mi and already having problem(s)!?

Hey Folks,

I'm a MINI newb and proudly bought my very first 2013 MINI Cooper Hardtop (automatic) from Crevier MINI in Orange County, CA. There were 23mi on it when I drove it off the lot.

After less than 24 hours of owning the car, it's already showing an alert and causing me to rethink my decision. It seems to light-up whenever I'm slowing down to a stop.

I checked the Owner's Manual and it says,

Lights up in yellow: Have the system checked as soon as possible.
The dealership is asking me to bring the car into service, which I'll do in a little bit, but I wanted to get some outside opinions on this before it's "too late."
  1. Has anybody heard of this happening before?
  2. Should I be worried about more issues down the road?
  3. Any advice/tips/recommendations before I visit the dealer?

Thanks in advance guys!

I wouldn't worry. Do you feel it doing anything strange? Hard to say cause the car is so young. If it's just an alert light, take it in and see what they say. Early days yet.

I don't have the 2013 manual; the 2011 manual that I downloaded says a bit more about it:

Lights up in yellow: Have the system checked as soon as possible.

> Automatic selector lever locked:
Selector lever locked in position P
with engine running and brake
depressed or Manually releasing the selector lever
lock, page 48.

> brake signal malfunctioning: gear
can be engaged without depressing
the brake
To engage a gear while the vehicle is
at a standstill, always depress the
brake. Before leaving the vehicle,
move the selector lever to position P
and switch off the engine.

Is yours stuck in park, and won't release with the foot brake pressed? Or, can you move it out of park WITHOUT pressing the brake? That's what it's complaining about. There's supposed to be an interlock, but it's sensing something's wrong.

If you're driving it aok, and you can park / start / put it into "D" and go, it doesn't sound serious at all. It's lighting up when slowing down for a stop? Shouldn't, of course.

Yes, the dealer can chase it down. Some connector a bit wiggly, perhaps. Nothing dire, I wouldn't think. Surprised they didn't catch it during pre-delivery checks, but it happens.

Update

Hey Guys, thanks for looking into this. So I brought my MINI into the dealer/service and they stuck me with a loaner BMW.

I got a call about 3 hours later with an update. They determined that there's a faulty "gear box" (basically the shifter iirc) and since it's 2013 and they don't have extra inventory, they'll need to order the part from Germany (which can take over 2 weeks to arrive)!!! They don't recommend I drive the car and/so it'll have to stay in the shop for 2 weeks.

Strike #1. Sheesh, I REALLY hope this car ain't a lemon...

Exactly, he has a loaner which isn't his MINI that he bought. Pretty sure he has every right to be pissed off...

take the car back...

seems like, mini is starting to cheap out in their later models. I was fairly, no, extremely Un-impressed by their hardtop roadster. looks fine from the outside, but the inside is fairly lame and CHEAP, both in looks and feel.

example: the sunvisor only works if its in Front of you. its completely worthless as a side sun blocker.
example: the roof doesnt even have a DOME Light (wtf)

and i cant really remember anything else. prolly bc i was just done at that point... i also mostly see the R56's in the mini shop in orlando whenever i go. even the techs say those cars are in all the time, and they just werent made quite as beafy as the R53's.

I heard the exact opposite when I was shopping for my MINI. In fact, every single place I looked online said the R56 was a vast improvement over the R50/R53. The only exception that I saw was some preferred the R53 over the R56 S models.

I would be concerned if the problem was a poorly done assembly. Not so much if it is a part failure. Also, I'd want to know what they have to do to fix the car. Remove the transmission? Engine? Good luck with it and be very picky about the work done.

My R56 and R60 are far better made than my R53 was.....It had issues. Give the guys at Crevier a chance and they will make it right.
