I went to the mini dealer to see about a trade for my 2008 mini cooper S 6-speed with 20,400 miles on it. I ordered it with the sports package/all dark silver. The car is in top shape, no dings and is been really well cared for. I want to trade up for a 2009 or 2010 with a automatic. They talked about the trade in for mine was $17,000 to $20,000. I thought that was really low considering that a lot of them are on the market for $22,000-$23,000.Is a private sale the only way to go? are they yanking my chain? they brag about the value of this car until you want to change. Any feedback would help, bottom line is these cars are great and I want to stay with MINI.
If the dealer gives you $20,000 and then sales it for $22,000 then they only make $2000. What do you expect from the dealer who has to pay rent, insurance, employees....? Yes you should try and sell it yourself to get the extra 10% the dealer must make as profit. Just some info though, I just bought a 08 S (<6000 miles) w/ sports, convenience, premium, cold, xenon's, lounge leather, rear park distance, lifetime sat,... for less than $23,000. Also come Jan 1st the value decreases so you need to hurry.
Im not saying $20,000(that would be really fair), they started out at $17,000 which I thought was a insult. I know about running a business and you have a good point about the timetable. You got a great deal, enjoy the ride, sounds really nice.......... Thanks for your help
NADA lists rough at $17,575, average at $18,935, and clean at $20,025. Clean resale at $23,100. Remember whenever a salesman talks about how a vehicle retains its value they are talking resale not trade-in. I'd sell it privately if it is convenient!! Good luck with whichever way you decide to go.

If you sell it privately, be prepared to have it sit for awhile. Sometimes it can be difficult to sell private party. Especially in this economy. Beware of tire kickers, that will just waste your time!
