New Peugot with a MINI S engine

Peugeot confirmed that its striking 308 RC Z would enter production several months back but never revealed any further details. Speaking at the Lisbon Motor Show in April, Peugeot boss Jean-Philippe Collin said the car was destined for production at that the final version would be revealed at next year’s Frankfurt Motor Show.

Latest reports claim the first cars will be produced next year but not by Peugeot. Instead, independent vehicle manufacturer Magna Steyr will build the cars at a plant in Austria and annual production numbers are expected to top 20,000 units. Austrian newspaper Kleine Zeitung said the assembly of the vehicle will take place in Graz, Austria, towards the end of next year with the first cars expected to arrive in showrooms by the middle of 2010.
Like the concept version, the production car will ride on a lightened chassis but will still be based on the 308 platform. Expect to see the same strut suspension set-up in the front and torsion beam at the rear. The most likely engine option will be the same 1.6L supercharged engine from the smaller 207 RC (also shared with the Mini Cooper S) but power is expected to be boosted to around 220hp.

It is a shared engine MINI doesn't make engines. The new engines in the MINI are made by Peugot.

From what I hear, the engine is made by BMW, at the Ham Hall plant, not too far from Oxford. Peugot is getting their engines from BMW, not the other way around.

That engine is a joint venture. 50% Pug & 50% BMW. If it makes you happy call it a BMW or a Pug if you'd rather.

... and it's turbocharged (which is, technically, "supercharging" but powering the supercharger using exhaust gases instead of a mechanical drive), or normally aspirated...

Cool looking car though. I bet their owners don't wave...

Yes and no. engines bound for Minis and soon BMWs are assembled to BMW's spec at Hams Hall (owned by BMW). All parts are produced by Peugeot's factories because of scale of economy. The engine design is BMW with "some" input from Peugeot.

So...

who peed in your Cheerios today?

Matt

Nothing but good can come from this. The more cars that use the engine, the bigger the market for hot parts!

Peugeot doesn't even bring cars to the US (sadly, as the 207 is wicked fun). Hardly competition. The MINI's motor has never been exclusive

After looking at Shawn's Window sticker, I'm not so sure. It says the engine is from France, which would probably be Pugeot.

That'd be Getrag, I wasn't surprised at that.
