Actually, that first generation key is the second generation key of the first generation MINI. Another type of key proceeded it.

The new generation key is a disk (looks almost like a key fob) that clicks into the dash...you start the car w/ a start button. Not a typical key.

Yup ("later first gen MINI key")--I couldn't find a pic of that one but I see minihune has taken care of that.

aren't there 2 keys that look just like the 1st generation key...one with a replacable battery (mine, '04) and the later key which looks identical but has the rechargable battery that recharges in proximity to the steering column?

Yeah, I forget when they switched over but the newer keys recharge when in the ignition.

the MCS key had a colored-in mini logo? not very fair!

my 2004 just-a-cooper came with 2 keys with the clicker, and one "extra" key that works like a valet key but is the same size as the regular key.

if i had my choice, though, i'd get my key redone to look like a VW/audi key (the actual key swings out of the clicker/keyfob), except in carbon fiber instead of plain black plastic.
