JCW Clutch Issues True or False?
#27
Although, I had seen some post around the net where the dealer would begrudgingly replace the clutch, but firmly blamed it on the driver for abusing it, even though it was under warranty and had low miles.

Yaaaa man exactly .. i was shocked when i saw the $4,000 for a cluch .. that is really tooooooooooo much .. is this true?! i have to ask the dealer how much is the cost for the cluch to prepare my self.

This is the first clutch failure I have read on NAM on a factory JCW car. There are numerous threads about S model clutch issues. I don't think it's widespread or a "known" issue at all. BTW, I'm on troublefree JCW number two.

2 Bulls#@t flags for bad news dealers: 1:They try and blame the owner for a suddenly failed clutch and balk at replacing it under warranty. 2:They blame "bad gas" for a fuel pump or similar problem. Seriously, clutches usually are fine (my S's is 4 years old no problems). But my next Mini will be a JCW with an automatic next year I think. Been there, done that.

Where did you hear that? They would need to uprate the Aisin automatic like they did with the Getrag manual. The factory JCW is a pretty low volume car. Not sure if it would make sense to dump money into the automatic just to be able to offer it. I don't think there would be that many takers for an automatic JCW...

My JCW is an '09. It has 20k miles on it, along with one HPDE at VIR and probably 250+ autocross runs with 2 drivers running it at the NEDIV Championship, the VA Autocross Championship, and Solo Nationals in Lincoln. Suspension is modfied for STX, but the car is otherwise stock. No clutch problems so far. Like someone said, you just read about the problems.

JCW clutch failure
My JCW burnt out the clutch at 15,000 km. It is my 25th Mini over 38 years and the first clutch I have EVER had to change (usually blew up the gearbox or engine first!!)
It was a early model - number 98 off the line - and BMW found a problem with the dual mass flywheel.
They replaced it under warranty.

I don't have any information about 2010 and 2011, but in 2009 there were 498 factory JCWs imported to the US. Canada got 67 and Mexico, 33, I think for a total of under 600 cars. World-wide, many places may be like what I'm seeing in Taiwan: mostly Justas and some Ss, but no JCWs so far. Given the price premium, it may be a tough sell in many parts of the world. Anyway, that's the long way of saying that it might not be economically feasible to fund the development of the automatic so that it can back up the horsepower increase. The total MINI volume in the US for a year is only around 45,000, so the JCWs represent a small fraction of the total. If BMW couldn't make financial sense out of doing a floor pan modification in order to sell diesels in the US, I don't think that there is much chance that we'll see an automatic JCW.

I just purchased a used jcw 2009 r56 with 17k miles on it
It has a bad click every time you depress it to shift gears
I inspected the clutch pedal and it seems to hit a black tubular part that lies just above the dead pedal. The back of the clutch pedal has a part that prevents it from going thru the floor board prior to it reaching the floor board it hits this piece every time PIA I will take it to the dealer come Monday

There is a TSB I believe for a clutch pedal issue (not clutch disk related). My dealership fixed this for me when I was having regular service done. I hadn't noticed the issue yet. Sounds like you may have this issue.

Just hit 25K miles on mine. Only issue is that when the clutch sees heave use (think stop-and-go up a hill) it will make an odd humming sound from when it first starts to grab until it fully engages ... dealer said not to worry as it still functions fine.
Any ideas what would cause that? It has only done it ~4 times.

Look at it this way: if the gearbox was strong enough a 208hp JCW, it would be grossly over designed for a 125hp Justa. That would mean that BMW would be giving money away with every Justa 6-speed.

My clutch is making a sporadic rattle when stopped and in neutral. When I depress the clutch pedal the rattle stops. I've done some searching on NAM and found some info about a loose flywheel, but no consensus of whether it is actually a problem or not.
Anyone else have this or know if it's normal?

I have 18800 miles on my 09 JCW clubman and my clutch died today.
Slipping, horrible burning smell.
My service writer advised having it towed in rather than trust it to safely make it the 20 miles to the dealership,
They had BETTER not try and argue that it was driver error, my Civic Si went 126K miles of being driven a lot more aggressively than this car with no clutch issues!
