What a difference a new clutch makes...

So I picked up my 09 JCW Clubman at the end of June (w/ 8miles on the clock) & the clutch had some pressure (on the pedal) & at 5k RPM I couldn't get into gear.

Well last Monday at 10:30pm, whilst leaving a downtown Philadelphia engagement & heading back to my home, I had a JCW meltdown. [about 4,200miles]

The day before the JCW giving off this odd vibration noise in 1,3,& 4th gear as I shifted at odd RPMs, plus I didn't feel as if I was getting all the cogs whilst accelerating(thought down shifting seemed normal). So within about a mile (on East River/Kelly Drive & Lincoln Drive) all hell happened. First the car was giving me the same odd lack of gears/cogs whilst accelerating, then at a light (Whissahickon&Lincoln) smoke poured from the under the hood, the smell of clutch gave me a headache & well my fears kicked in. I made it about 1/2 mile post the light, and no gears would sync. (stuck in the right lane, no shoulder) for 2+ hours(thankfully it was was post rush hour & I wasn't on a hidden curve).

Roadside Assistance didn't work out so well, but I knew a local flat bed company; which I was relieved was open at 11pm on a Monday.

The car was towed to MINI Princeton(NJ) the day after & I waited for news. The news came on Wednesday after they had done some diagnosis & checking with MINI. I needed a new clutch....

I picked up my car this afternoon...news was: Clutch Disc fragmented which overheated the flywheel which heat cracked. Princeton MINI & MINI USA were gracious to replace as a onetime goodwill/warranty fix.

As I said I picked up this evening, the clutch was extremely soft/light, thus I thought a spring or such was missing. Apparently this is how a clutch should feel when new(with newly greased bearings, flywheel & such). [I stalled 3x pulling out the dealership] {I brought it back to confirm minutes later}

---my only question is why didn't it feel like this from the start??

no doubt your clutch was faulty from the beginning. I would have been shocked if MINI didn't replace it

My story is almost same, but I stalled 4 times getting out of the garage at the dealer.

Made my MA drive it with me, thought something was wrong!

It will have more pressure after it breaks in again.
