Electrical Aftermarket rally lights with OEM switch?

Aftermarket rally lights with OEM switch?

Hey all - I recently installed PIAA 540s and want to go with a factory look for the switch. I ordered the oem switch from ECS whose website said the switch could be used with aftermarket lights. However the piaa harness has 3 wires and the oem switch accepts a 4 wire connector....

I'm sure someone has bumped up against this issue. What do I need to do to install/wire the piaa harness to the oem switch?? Thanks!

Does the ECS website have a pdf of the install? Light switches only need three, so the OEM must use the extra connection to power or to ground, not sure which.

there are 4 pins though on the oem switch. my question is how do i connect that to the piaa harness which has 3 wires. I've attached a pic of the wiring schema for the oem kit… it shows 4 wires, but not sure how to read this AND/or how to connect the 3 wires once I decide which 3 wires need to be connected. FYI i also don't want to cut the piaa harness in case I want to resell at some point so basically i need an adapter that can attach on one end to the piaa 3 pin harness and on then wire to something that can attach to the oem switch…

If I read the diagram right, the fourth pin is from the radio, i.e. power in Aux. I would guess that just lights up the button portion of the switch (rather than the green 'armed' light). GR/RT is gray/red.

The above URL shows the pinout in which pin 14 is 'illumination'
IMO, you're fine just not hooking it up. But if you're an OEM geek (like me) you could run a jumper from the gray/red head unit wire to the switch.

If you're even more of a geek, you'll get the '05/06 console (if you don't already have it) and the OEM extender cable (oh, wait you don't have the OEM kit, which would make it easier) and install the switch there rather than hacking up the knee bolster or installing it in the euro parcel shelf cutout.

what do you mean about the 05/06 console? is there a spot on that for the aux driving lights?

so i purchased the extender cable from the oem kit actually and i plan to attach the switch on one end (installed in euro shelf cutout) and then do whatever i need to do on the other end to attach to the piaa 3 pin mechanism.

my question is more specifically, how do i physically do that? not familiar with wiring all that much (although this process has been informative). i'd rather not destroy the switch wire or the piaa harness so i can resell. my issue is that everything terminates not in wire ends but in connection switches and i have a 3 pin connection piece (piaa harness) and a 4 pin connection piece (oem switch). so without cutting those connection pieces off and splicing wires directly, how do i do this? or is that the only way...

The '02-04 console has the TPMS switch in front. The 05/06 has a cutout on either side for the TMPS and (optionally) the driving light switch. See pics in the thread below.

The extender is smart, so you can have a clean connection at the switch. I'm allergic to cutting as well Easiest would be to cut the end of the extender cable to connect to the PIAA plug, but also easy enough to make a custom jumper between the two (wrap well to avoid a short!), then add in the illumination to the OEM extender.

Quick question Eric - so looking at the wiring diagram, I know that the red/gray wire taps into the radio and the brown is the ground. So I know I need connect the brown wire from the oem switch to the black wire of the piaa harness, but how do I know which of the other two wires is which?

The piaa has two other white wires (one powers the switch and one is the hi beam tap). I'm not sure from the attached diagram which is which on the oem switch though...

I guess I have a 50/50 shot, of guessing right but if I guess wrong will that damage the switch? Thanks in advance for your help!

A generic search on PIAA wiring harness says the switched power is white with red dots. Can't see them having two identical wires - makes a wiring harness meaningless.

Think that a good idea. 61120412968 is for that wire extension that is mentioned. Moving it to the center console.
