two questions=footwell/boot

Boot: I read the Owner's manual and it says if I hold down the unlock button it pops the trunk, NO IT DOESN'T

It makes the popping noises, but still can't open it. what's the point? can I change what that function does? rolling down the windows would be a lot more useful.

btw, this is an 02 cooper S

footwell: I love the lights when the door opens, I was wondering if I could add in an additional switch to turn them on when I want. anyone done this? I read this thread http://www.northamericanmotoring.com...-the-time.html
but didn't really get an answer. Any help is apreciated.

Thank you,

The dome light switch turns them on (but also the dome light). For footwells only, you can connect an SPDT (single pole double throw)
switch inline.

One input is the original wire, the other is 12v. The switch would flip between standard operation and ON. To operate for both footwells, you'd have to insert the switch into the wire before the signal splits to the two footwells.

Thank you RKW, two questions for you.

1. do you know where this wire is?
2. is there any danger in overloading it? i.e. if I flipped the switch on, and then opened the door, would that be too much? or since it's switched, it is only getting one source at a time. I think it's the latter, but wanted to check.

To connect to one footwell, use the + wire going to that footwell bulb. If you want both footwells to operate at the same time, according to the wiring diagrams, both footwells are actually connected to the same power. So follow upstream until they come together, and wire the switch there. The wiring diagrams show them coming together at a connector plug under the dash to the left of the steering column. You should be able to find the connector if you follow the harness from the drivers side footwell light. You will want to cut and connect to a brown + yellow wire on the other side of the connector. There is no danger of overload.

As far as the boot issue, for my '06 the Owner's Manual only says that the key unlocks the boot (not pop it), and that's how it works on my car.

Holding remote control open button:

Luggage compartment unlocking
Comfort opening
No function

Supposedly there are three options, listed above. These can be reprogrammed by the dealer (usually at the cost of 1/2 hr labor.) I have the comfort opening (holding the unlock opens the sunroof and the windows)
