Lighter Socket Replacement

The lighter socket in my 07 MCS has shorted out - blows the fuse whenever I try to use it. I need this power outlet for my GPS. Currently I am running a RadioShack extension cord from the rear power outlet as a work-around.

The OEM outlets are regrettably cheap and flimsy, easily deformed by repeated plug insertions. Bean counters obviously prevailed when BMW chose the supplier for the power outlet plugs. I would like to replace the flimsy power outlet plugs - both of them - with heavier-duty, more reliable items.

Would appreciate advice/suggestions on where to source more substantial power outlet plugs, as well as installation tips. Thanks in advance.

I would lift the console and look for a short (wires touching together or anything else).

The Mini should not blowing the fuse with that small of a load. Have you tried another extension cord to isolate and insure that is not the problem?

I had a similar problem and after replacing to many fuses I discovered a dime, yes a $0.10 coin, in the bottom of the lighter socket. What are the chances of that happening? I doubt this is your problem but it might be worth looking down into the socket to see if you've got something down in there making trouble.
