Radar detector/GPS hiding wires

Hi guys,

I know this question has been asked before, but I couldn't really find the answer I was looking for. I have a cigarette lighter outlet splitter, that has a Cobra Laser/Radar detector, and a TomTom connected to it. I would like to put the radar detector to the left of my rearview mirror, and I always end up suctioning the GPS to the speedometer. Does anyone have any ideas for hiding all those wires??

Right now I have the splitter behind the glove box, with the wires running up the side next to the door, onto the top of the dashboard. But, the splitter keeps falling on people's feet, and it's really not the setup I want.

If anyone has any suggestions, it would be much appreciated.

Thanks.

This post should help you out with the wiring for the radar detector, so that it does not have to go into the cigarette lighter socket.

Then for the GPS you can just run a single long cable around under the dash and up around the dash (tucked into the side panels and against the glass) to have power for the GPS.

I mounted my nuvi next to the tach (had to make my own bracket) and ran the wires through the steering column, underneath the dash and to the 12V socket - I added a new outlet inside the center console and plugged the Garmin power supply in. Thus the stock socket is still available and the wires are hidden inside the console.

V1 is hardwired to the popular spot behind the sunroof controls (comes on when any door is open), so I'm going to re-route it through the A-pillar and into the same spot as the GPS. (As long as I can confirm that wiring won't be in the way of the A-pillar airbags).

zoltiz, I think I may do something like that. I'd rather not hardwire anything. It's my first car, and I'd freak out if I screwed something up. I really just need to find a really long cord I could use for my radar detector and I'll be all set. I checked PepBoys, Advanced Auto Parts, and Wal-Mart today and I couldn't find anything.

There are no A-piller airbags; just a cool screw cover that says airbag. The airbag is actually in the overhead above both doors. I have been in the A-piller and overhead twice routing wires.

Some people say that I will never get the money out of my MINI that I have put into it. I say, "I get my money's worth everytime I hit the ignition button".

Hey everyone,

Thought I'd let you know how I direct-wired by new Escort Redline. I wired it, as others have mentioned to the unused (on my car) PDC fuse holder using an Add-a-fuse (mini style). Got it at Kragen for about $7.00. The Redline direct-wire kit came with spade-type connection for the hot side, while the add-a-fuse came with a universal insert-wire-and-crimp setup. I cut this last off the add-a-fuse and instead crimped on a female spade connector. This way, if I ever want to disconnect it, it'll be easier. As for the ground, I removed the panel directly above the large kick-panel piece which contains the fusebox access. This is a smaller, elongated trim piece, and it pops out by pulling backwards and upwards. Behind this I found the bolts which secure the fuse panel to the body. This makes a good ground, so I carefully removed the bolt nearest the door opening (if you do this, don't drop it down into the hidden trim area - this would make for a difficult day!).
The ground wire which came with the Redline direct connection kit had a circular bolt-through tip on the end - too small for the bolt I intended to use. So I cut it off and crimped on a larger, forked type of connector.
I attached this to the bolt which I had uscrewed.
Before hooking up the Redline, I used an voltmeter to ensure that 1. Power was available and 2. The power was switched on and off when the ignition was activated/deactivated. This was the reason I did it this way - so that it would turn off with the car. This worked, so I ran the wires behind the trim area and up the inside of the weather moulding. I removed the A-pillar trim, as described in other posts. This is the only part which gave me any trouble - I did not realize there were two plastic "bayonet" things which pressed into the actual metal A pillar. So, I essentially ruined these. I ran the wire up the A pillar and across, under the headliner, to where the mirror connects. Then I put all the trim back - done! I still need to purchase two of the bayonet things and re-install the A pillar trim, but it looks ok for now. I doubt anyone would notice anything - the trim is slightly bowed out as it no longer has the two bayonets securing the center part.
Other than that - looks and works great.
Thanks for all the posts on this topic.

Had already ran my wires to my Passport 9500IX before I saw that you can find a hot in the headliner.. DOH!! Too late now... Have my wires running to the inside right side fuse panel... ready to attach.

Can't tell from the previous post what wire in that area is switched and/or if a ground has been found.. Can anyone tell me what color wire is switched inside the panel? Here's a shot I just took of my 2008 S..

Any help would be appreciated...
