Trying to get HID projector and light..

Hello,

I have 06 mini cooper. I am trying to get HID kit for my mini. As you guys may know it needs projector.... It is actually hard for me to find one for the 06 model in ebay... mossmini and xtralight sell halo projectors for 02~06 which look exactly same as ebay ones to me. Here are my questions...

1. is the halo projector can be used for hid light?
xtralight sells as a set.. please see this..
http://www.xtralights.com/index.asp?...OD&ProdID=3134

2. like I said the ebay projectors for 02~05 models look exactly same as the one in mossmini and xtralight. Does anyone know about the difference between 05 headlight part and 06 one?
here is the ebay one
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/XENON...Q5fAccessories

and this is the mossmini and xtralights one
MOSSMINI
http://www.mossmini.com/Shop/ViewPro...eIndexID=67312
xtralights
http://www.xtralights.com/index.asp?...OD&ProdID=1879

I've been searching information concerning these things for a while. If you can take a little time for this I really appreciate it.

Thank you much in advance.

im pretty sure those are all the same, someone is using those with HID lights and they say the cut off is so-so, im not sure which thread it was, you could always look for the oem ones with the projector, or the early ones without the projector.

This is the same response I sent to you via e-mail, but I will post it here for you as well. I'm not sure which one you'll check first.

Sorry for the slow response. My car is a 2005. As far as I know, the 2006 headlights are the exact same as the 2005. It would be kind of silly for BMW to change the headlight style being that the 2006 was the last year for the 1st generation MINI.

I would say that you'd be safe to get the headlights for your car. Now, my lights I picked up from Ebay are actually halogen and not HID. They do have a glass projector on them and they are modeled after HID lights. The ones you are looking at are HID, but I have no experience with them. They look like they are from the same company as mine though. I'd say you'd be safe to get these lights. If you have any more questions, please feel free to ask me.

Go Sounders/Mariners/Soni....err

if your headlights are like those pictured in your post you can use H7 based xenon kits like I have. Check out my other posts in this subforum.

oh...

I just found out that 05 model uses different bulb from 06 models'.

http://www.xtralights.com/index.asp?...n=Custom&ID=62

06 models use same high beams as 07 ones.

If I am wrong please someone correct me....

Thanks,

Look at your light assemblies. On the clear lens it will be stamped (molded in) the style of bulb that is used. According to the link you sent, 2002 - 2007 minis use the H7 for low beam. My 2008 Mini Conv (R52, older body style) uses H7's as well. My lights look just like yours in your pictures and I purchased a HID kit for H7 bulb style. Worked like a charm.

One more thing, you can save a lot of money by using a different vendor for your kits. Mine was $50 delivered.

(I live in the puget sound area, btw)

Nice...

It's so nice of you to explain the detail... I appreciate it..
Thank you for your info but I am still confused about the projector..
like this...
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/02-05...Q5fAccessories

all the projector stuff in the ebay is actually for 02~05.. not for 06..
So that is why I was confused that there is any difference between 05 and 06 model..

Sorry for miscommunication... my bad...

and I am glad to know that you're in ps member too.

the H7 kit that i am referring to is just a bulb and igniter system that uses your current light housing.

The link to the ebay item is for a non OEM light housing that doesnt look like it includes HID bulbs. I do not know much about these kits, but have seen them mentioned on this forum before.

thanks

Yes I see what you're saying.. and I understood I need HID system + new housing for the HID because mini 06 standard housing is not for the HID...

So I thought to get HID kit I need to get new housing and HID conversion kit and my last question was about the housing.. In ebay only I could find was 02~05 so I thought there was difference between 05 and 06..

Sorry for confusing question and thank you for your concern and time.

I am currently looking for a professional installer for new projector + HID kit for my mini 06 now.. wish me luck please...

thanks a lot,

Yes, it is true that the OEM non-HID light housing on your MINI was designed for Halogen lamps. Yet, as you can see from my other post in this section, I was able to purchase and install an H7 based HID bulb and balast system in the OEM non-HID light housing (same as your picture) and not blind oncoming cars. The cut-off pattern in the Halogen light housing you have on your car currently is sharp enough to cut the glare from the oncoming cars windshield area.

What I am saying here is: You do not necessarily need to purchase a projector light housing from Ebay or anywhere else, yet can still have the benefits of HID... as long as the light housings in the picture on your posts are same as on your car.

Alot of people have tried this, HIDs are expensive and people (including myself) have tried to find a lower cost option. But it just doesnt exist. Any aftermarket headlight projector or not that i have seen is going to be for halogens not HIDs, also all 02-06 (hardtop) and 05-08 (vert) have the same headlights. But you cant expect a person on eBay to know that. They usually dont get the model years right. Its been said so many times dont put HIDs add on kits in your halogen headlights. I have never seen it not cause glare or alot of other issues. Trust me its been tried to death. Best thing to do is find a set of OEM HIDs (especially since were special enough to have OEM HIDs unlike alot of cars) and call it a day.

IrishCooper-

I totally agree that Halogen light assemblies are typically made for Halogen bulbs. I also agree that the best way to add HIDs to a MINI is to buy the factory OEM HID kits (read: VERY EXPENSIVE with washer and auto leveling). I have no history with the Ebay alternatives, nor do I sell or work for any of the companies referred to by any of these posts.

But I must disagree on two points. First: 02-06 hard tops do *not* have the same headlamps. REALOEM.COM will verify this. Secondly, the 35W HID kit I have installed on my 2008 MCc w/OEM Halogen headlamp assembly is a good alternative to the factory system without the glare to oncoming cars. This is all subject to having the same housings as my car came with from the factory. YMMV, of course. Is it perfect? No. I believe it to be a cheap, reversable alternative with few drawbacks.

thank both of you...

thank both of you...

Urn-

I am just curious if you can help me out regarding the hid installation since you're in Seattle area.. Um... I understand that you're not the installer but if you can take a little time for me it would be awesome.. If it works out to you I am willing to pay reasonable fee for it.. If this is unappropriate please forgive me... I apologize it.

This is true, but the an 02 headlight will fit on an 06 and vice versa. The STYLE is what is different, in regards to the actual shape and mounting they are the same.

yes Ninjlao thats what i was going for the all 02-06 hardtop and 05-08 vert headlights are the same in that even though they updated the style in 05 they are all interchangable. And it was a response to the ebay vendor saying it only fits 02-05 cause it will also fit 06 hardtop and upto 08 vert. And im sorry i still disagree with HID headlights in a halogen housing Urn. The reflector pattern isnt designed for HID, i think HID in a halogen projector is ok but never in a non projector housing. And you might think your not getting glare but i guarantee you are. How do you know what other oncoming cars think about your lights?
