MINI Transmission problems

Can anyone who has had transmission problems or had to replace the
transmission give me the information. We have heard that the replacement
is very expensive and there are no rebuilt units available. We are considering
rebuilding the units but any information on what failed, complaints, etc.
would be very helpful.

Thanks in advance!

Synchros are the main failing combo in the 02-04 S trans. You unfortunately cant source them, I dont beleive. Some were saying something about a Ford Focus SVT Tranny parts being used but not sure. Also in the Coopers the midlands go out ALOT it seems....

search cvt issues /problems and you will gather a great deal of info. The belt in the cvt breaking is a common problem.

If you guys came up with a (relatively) inexpensive rebuild for the CVT you'd have a LOT of fans!

07 MINI 44k total clutch failure

the infamous squeaking noise in the clutch tranny wherever it was, Im told it was the pilot bearing, but who knows, Well heres my story, heard that noise thought ok itll go away, HAHAHA still there 2 weeks later call for aptt, soonest appt 2 weeks away im like ok. NEVER made it, total clutch failure. Mini roadside HAHAHAHA what a joke, they told me im on a restricted highway, i call thye dealer they come get me, 1 hour later they said 1700$$$$$$ you need a new clutch:mad :, I said im not paying, 44k clutch doesnt go, i traded in a 03 mini 120k never had an issue, why now, they said MINI USA policy is black n white, clutch disc worn you PAY....

My car got fixed by the dealer on there warranty, my fam has bought like 8 cars from them so they ate the cost or did whatever they did but, they changed clutch flywheel no more squeaks.....

oh yeah they also have a timing chain recall did that too......

i dunno my 03 120k never had a major problem EVER, my 07 has seen the shop more times in 44k then my 03 did during its whole life.....

The hardest part we have had is finding the transmission cores. I need to
purchase about ten units so that we can see the extent of the failures. If
you know of anyone who has the CVT trans. used for sale at core prices
let me know. Thanks again for all the info!

My biggest gripe is that the shifter is sloppy. It just has a ton of play. That and I'll grind everytime I try to go into reverse, unless I put the car in first gear and then go straight to reverse without moving. PITA, but it works.

transmission problems

i have a 2003 mini cooper and my tranny went out. i have about 93k miles and i have been thinking either get a new tranny, sell the car as is, or the other option is do a auotmatic transmission swap to a manuel. has anyone ever done that what would be the best price on my pocket?

I have a manual trans 03 MCS. I get that squeak sound when starting out from a dead stop, in first, and reverse. Mini told me that its a problem with the flywheel? And I can change it but I'll get the same problem.
My question is, can I get a after market flywheel that won't make that rusty squeak sound?

last 1/4 inch is the toughest!

MCS '02 44 thousand miles ..2nd trans working on the 3rd..
Chevy cobalt SS trans by Getrag..I think thats what I had heard..
I am trying to fix release problem currently I have 800 > 1000 miles on C.M alum flywheel disc and PP...
and doesnt release anymore..needs 1/4 more travel..I know ,,,,
I guess better to need only a 1/4 inch than a couple..

I would offer my services to have the syncros made I do business
in pacific rim. All I need are unworn examples.probably 90 Day turn around including QC and Shipping to Long Beach..thats how upset I am..

I have on 03 automatic cvt that needs to be replaced. I made it over 128k but thought it should have lasted longer. Is there anyone or anywhere that can replace it for the cost of any other car transmission repair?

Thanks!

2004 mc 5 spd manual transmission rebuild

I just got my car back from the transmission shop where it was for a month due to waiting for parts from Germany. my car had 65000 miles on it when the bearings and gears wore out. the rebuild cost was $4200. During the rebuild, the vent or breather on top of the transmission was destroyed, none was available anywhere including Germany according to my shop so they created a breather hose with a cap and we'll see if that works. I am very disappointed with the quality of mini's transmission and the difficulty in getting parts for it.

Good luck! BMW should really own up to their name and recall the cvt tranny. Check out how many MINI owners have already filed complaints with the NHTSA - http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/ivoq/index.cfm

Ugh for BMW not recalling their faulty tranny

Call Mini USA 866-ASK-MINI and ask for Jen. Jen was able to work with the dealership area representative to get our transmission fixed for half the warranty cost resulting in $3150 out of our pocket vs original $8000 quoted. Jen initially blew us off but cut a deal after mentioning we had documentation of the 03 transmission being problematic & notifiying her our next step would be to escalate our concern to a mediator with the Better Business Bureau (that really helped get buy in and support with the local BMW dealership).

You probably already have, but just in case here's the link to file a complaint about the tranny failure with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) - http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/ivoq/index.cfm

NHTSA is looking to recall the cvt tranny but needs enough data on the safety related default trends.

Last edited by Speedyturtle : 09-16-2009 at 10:49 PM. Reason: MINI USA knows tranny problematic & can cut a deal

Anyone know if there's a way to search to see if I've already complained? (I know I intended to when my CVT went out at 57K, just honestly don't recall if I followed through or not -- the "Search" function reveals a whopping 6 entries for the 05 MC CVT, 5 complaints TOTAL for MCc...)
