Alta diverter modified for Ram Intake

Here's a photo of the new front skirt I fabricated from Al sheet to capture the entire volume of air coming in the new M7 Ram Intake. The skirt fits under the scoop and both sides are extensions of the original Alta vertical seals, but go on either side of the scoop so there is no air "leaking" on the sides (which is the case with an unmodified Alta diverter) or at the front.

cheers,
phil

Very nice...do you have more pictures from various angles? How did you extend the Alta seals?

I'll take more photos, but honestly, you'll then see where I rivetted the new vertical pieces to the original ones and you'll think less of myworkmanship! Not really, but the new peice is now part of the original via the side seals and the sprayer. The good thing is that the seal covers the joint between the new verticals and the original so no-one would suspect a mod. I did do the black-to-silver paint fade just so that when you look into the scoop you don't see all that fugly silver--and the Al skirt is different in color to the painted Alta steel. You could paint the skirt silver I guess. I primed it and even grey it looked OK.
I bought 10ft of new rubber seal, which is identical to the Alta stuff, and seals right to the scoop. I'd say it's about 2" longer on both sides. I'll try to stuff my camera up in there to show you the seal.

Any chance of getting a pic from the front to see how it blocks out the fugly silver? That's the only thing holding me up from ordering one of these. Not liking how the IC looks through the enlarged scoop.

Regarding MSFITOYs request, I made some more photos but they don't show any detail, because it's all black, even with a flash. So I sketched this for you:

The left skirt has to be a separate item so as to allow the skirt to use the left IC bolt. The left skirt actually adds to the integrity of the whole thing, just as the right skirt does when bent up at 90deg and rivetted to the Alta.
The rubber seal is standard issue--matches the Alta rear one (I replaced both left and right as they are both longer) in all dimensions. There's no excessive heat problems, especially if the Ram Intake is working (!) Just got it from an auto parts store.
I will post a photo from the front tomorrow.
regards, phil

Hmmm like similar to what I did for the stock scoop and my diverter. I just need to get a bigger piece to extend it more.

By the way nice sketch and good to see others being productive!

Gee, Garrett--your Alta is really old! The latest ones have the vertical seals welded to the cover panel, whereas yours are riveted. Sweet! I remember seeing your model at Webb MS last year. Alta has come a long way quality-wise. The cover is also bent vertically at the front and not simply a flat panel like yours. Since you are running the stock scoop, you probably don't need my seal extensions, but if you look into the scoop at the right, do you see any gap between the scoop and the rubber seal? With the Ram Intake and the Alta there is about 2 inches of clear space on the right--just letting all that ram air past the IC diverter and over the engine! You'll also notice that my front skirt is not as radically bent down as yours, so that the air flow from the scoop to the IC is pretty planar. My scoop has two small rubber pieces attached to mate with the front skirt, so as to keep it as close to the lower lip as possible.
cheers,
phil

Actually the diverter is made by me! and for any gap issues, there is one little gap at the bottom, hench I need to get a longer piece of aluminum to extned the bent piece covering the whole diverter. Oh i had to trim the back of the scoop to allow for the diverter not to hit the scoop.

Cool! Home made--sweet. Why not refabricate it with the front skirt as one piece, rather than riveted on? I originally built an integrated one myself, but it looked like shite compared to the Alta, hence my need to build the add on. Whereas you obviously can fabricate it to a higher standard, so you should just make a whole new one with built in skirt. Then you can make the vertical seals to fit. Now I look closely I can see that your rubber seal is not the same as the Alta type.
Some of us build from the ground up, others just add wheels! btw, where is the water spray on your diverter?

cheers, phil

The water spray setup is still in the works. Waiting for warmer weather to come along for me to do the install!
