Short Shifter install problems!!!

I have a 2002 MINI Cooper S build date of 05/2002 I am trying to disconnect the shift cable that is connected to the shifter itself and I am having no luck at all.

Is there some kind of trick or tool to get the thing off?

I think there is a special tool that makes it easier, but I've never done it. Most reports I read involve those getting mangled and having to be replaced so take your time and do your research before you break them.

Nothing special it's just tricky. I usually get some bent needle nose pliers and kinda roll it to one side and that works.

I am trying as best I can to not destroy anything. I read on pelican parts install sheet he took an 14mm wrench and was able to pry down and remove it tried that did not work. The shifter doesn't need to be in any certain position or anything?

This is how we do it in the shop as it works the easiest. Just needle nose pliers on the shaft right above the ball and pop down.
