Drivetrain Maximum Oil Temperature... thoughts?

I have seen actual race cars hit 300F on oil. Generally 240 to 250 is high on a road car, but if you're hitting that for a few laps on a track I wouldn't worry. I have peaked at 250F on my truck towing a 18,000lb trailer up a hill, didn't cause any issues. However if you're hitting 250 just driving around town then that would be cause for alarm...

Thanks two250!

You're welcome. How hot is the ambient temp when you see 270? Most stock cars will hit that high on a warm day when being pushed on track. It definitely doesn't hurt to get a better oil cooler, but I wouldn't be too worried about 270 for a few minutes. Just make sure to change the oil frequently!

Also, what expensive oil cooler thingy ??????

His car is pretty modded. With more power comes more heat. Couple that with pushing it hard on the track and it's not surprising to see number that high. My good friend builds and tunes Corvettes. One guy was hitting 320F with a stock oil cooler at Willow Springs Raceway, he came in the next week and got an external cooler installed, brought it down to 230...

From Sneed 4 Speed. Only kit I can find. I'm not willing to piece together a universal kit... need the oil plate anyhow.

Yea that's pretty high for that day, I would invest in the cooler. Hey the price is better than a external cooler for my truck! Check the price on this out: http://www.bulletproofdiesel.com/pro...ndard-duty.htm

Does the 2012 Cooper S have an actual oil temperature sensor and gauge?
My 2006 has a gauge (chrono pack) but no sensor, so the speculation is that the oil temperature is calculated based on other measured factors.
In all my track days I've never had a strange oil temperature reading except once and then it was pegged as hot as the gauge could go. I believe it was an incorrect calculation as previously I had driven for longer on track and in hotter temperatures and never saw that type of reading that I saw that day. The engine was fine and the coolant temp was normal.
So before we get too concerned we should probably know the accuracy of the measurement (or calculation.) Just a thought ...

Nice setup! I only have vacuum/boost right now, really want water and oil temp. Just a matter of installing them. After doing 3 or more gauge installs on 5 vehicles I'm pretty burnt...

I think oil pressure as being of high importance, imagine you happen to notice oil pressure progressively dropping over time, that info is worth the price of a new engine.

I put the oil temperature sensor on the Cravenspeed oil pressure adaptor along with the oil pressure sensor. I mounted the oil pressure sensor remotely on the end of a two foot length of 1/4" hydraulic hose so that there would be room on the Cravenspeed adaptor for two fittings.

i asked because i have found on my old R60/6 BMW motorcycle that the sensor location can make a 40-50 degree F difference in the temp reading, the oil pan temp being much lower than an oil galley temp
