Maximum Oil Temperature... thoughts?

Just checking the consensus... anybody know what the max temperature should be for engine oil? Let's go with 5W-30. I don't think there's a written rule... just want to know if there are racers out there that may have an idea... thanks!

I have seen actual race cars hit 300F on oil. Generally 240 to 250 is high on a road car, but if you're hitting that for a few laps on a track I wouldn't worry. I have peaked at 250F on my truck towing a 18,000lb trailer up a hill, didn't cause any issues. However if you're hitting 250 just driving around town then that would be cause for alarm...

I see 250 F on the track easy... sometimes as high as 270 F... I think I'm gonna bite the bullet and get that expensive oil cooler thingy... sigh...

Thanks two250!

You're welcome. How hot is the ambient temp when you see 270? Most stock cars will hit that high on a warm day when being pushed on track. It definitely doesn't hurt to get a better oil cooler, but I wouldn't be too worried about 270 for a few minutes. Just make sure to change the oil frequently!

So the stock heat exchanger(#4) isn't really helping?

Ambient was in mid 70's (cold day)... Just had an oil change. Contemplating another one for this weekend before tackling Fontana's Auto Club Speedway. Half the track is an oval so high temps for sure...

His car is pretty modded. With more power comes more heat. Couple that with pushing it hard on the track and it's not surprising to see number that high. My good friend builds and tunes Corvettes. One guy was hitting 320F with a stock oil cooler at Willow Springs Raceway, he came in the next week and got an external cooler installed, brought it down to 230...

From Sneed 4 Speed. Only kit I can find. I'm not willing to piece together a universal kit... need the oil plate anyhow.

Yea that's pretty high for that day, I would invest in the cooler. Hey the price is better than a external cooler for my truck! Check the price on this out: http://www.bulletproofdiesel.com/pro...ndard-duty.htm

That oil plate is EXACTLY what I had envisioned fabricating if I wanted to get the oil out of the stock circuit to an external cooler. Their kit is really pricey though(I'm still adjusting the price of MINI aftermarket items)

Synthetic oils don't burn until they get over 400 F. I never see my oil temperature go over 260F in the summer. I don't think an oil cooler is necessary, with a good synthetic oil.

Does the 2012 Cooper S have an actual oil temperature sensor and gauge?

My 2006 has a gauge (chrono pack) but no sensor, so the speculation is that the oil temperature is calculated based on other measured factors.

In all my track days I've never had a strange oil temperature reading except once and then it was pegged as hot as the gauge could go. I believe it was an incorrect calculation as previously I had driven for longer on track and in hotter temperatures and never saw that type of reading that I saw that day. The engine was fine and the coolant temp was normal.

So before we get too concerned we should probably know the accuracy of the measurement (or calculation.) Just a thought ...

Using ScanGauge II for the oil temp reading.

I added an oil temperature sensor and a gauge as well as a boost/vacuum, water temperature and oil pressure gauges.

Nice setup! I only have vacuum/boost right now, really want water and oil temp. Just a matter of installing them. After doing 3 or more gauge installs on 5 vehicles I'm pretty burnt...

Speaking of oil temperatures and oil pressure I don't see these options for gauges in my Torque app pro on my Android...?

I was thinking the same thing. Heck it was half the reason I opened the thread. Maybe we should make a request to the developer?

I think oil pressure as being of high importance, imagine you happen to notice oil pressure progressively dropping over time, that info is worth the price of a new engine.

It's all important. Saw 280 F oil, 250+ F water at Auto Club Speedway today.

I see temps in the 250's pulling mountain grades pretty frequently; drops down right away once the grade is over though.

where did you put the oil temp sensor? in the oil pan or in an oil galley/line?

I put the oil temperature sensor on the Cravenspeed oil pressure adaptor along with the oil pressure sensor. I mounted the oil pressure sensor remotely on the end of a two foot length of 1/4" hydraulic hose so that there would be room on the Cravenspeed adaptor for two fittings.

thanks

i asked because i have found on my old R60/6 BMW motorcycle that the sensor location can make a 40-50 degree F difference in the temp reading, the oil pan temp being much lower than an oil galley temp
