to tune or not to tune.....

I'm fairly new to the mini scene and have been doing lots of reading on this forum. I have mixed feelings on whether I need bigger injectors or not. Which would then involve a tune?

so she's a 03 r53 with:

New Teflon coated sc running a 17% pulley
Cai
cat back system
wankey big intercooler

not sure if its enough mods that bigger injectors are essential?
also always get 98 octane fuel if that affects anything.

Matt.

I doubt you need a tune. If you had more mods you would notice it, but you really aren't there yet. When you go for a pulley, cam, head then yes you need one. I wouldn't consider bigger injectors at this point. With all the mods on my cars the tune was a necessity and a big improvement.

Just the answer I was looking for! don't really feel like spending and extra $1500 at the current stage. A quaife is far to important!

On my 02 I ran without a tune or bigger injectors for over a year and it had the TPR2 head, NS1 cam, 17% pulley, Meth, CAI & Milltek. Once I attended the "tuning party" I did get the 450 injectors and did notice a little improvement but it ended up being more for peace of mind than anything I felt "butt dyno" wise. I had it retuned after the Bytetronik was installed last summer and "butt dyno" was much more impressive. I had installed a V2 header from Mynes before the 2nd tune and that plus the Bytetronik contributed greatly to the impressive performance increase.

The only thing I'd do if it was mine is put in the 380's and enjoy the performance and call it a day.

The op is in australia.....they use the euro method determing/rating octane, not the us r+m/2 method....that octane he quotes is basicly us, east coast 93-94.

So are you suggesting that I can fit 380cc injectors without a tune?

You can run the 380's without a tune, just nothing bigger, and it won't increase the power without a tune.

+1, the ECU will adapt to 380's on it's own, just nothing larger.

Yup...380's are very popular with light mods and no tune needed. Beyond 380's you need the tune but I'm not sure who does the tune in SA?

There's no one that I can find. Adelaides just not the city to live in if your looking for an experienced mini tuner. if you drive a Commodore or falcon that's a different story!!

ill try find some jcw injectors and leave it at that. I'm surprised they seem to be more pricey then 550 injectors

That's because everyone wants the ones that are maxed and don't need a tune vs the ones that do need a tune and mods to make it run right.

some tune confusion

Tuning should help with efficiency both in generating power and milage
