Clutch Help... Possibly?

Recently, ive been hearing bit of a ticking noise coming from my clutch. Only when im in neutral at idle i here it. when i push on the clutch it goes away, but when i release it, it comes back. the ticking sound isnt super loud, and the car runs fine. Just wondering what it could possibly be coming from? would it be about time for me to get a new clutch? i got an 03, with 26,000 miles.

Possibilities of the clutch being bad may be possible, i learned how to drive stick on the car... idk if that'll have an effect. clutch seems pretty stiff, not loose when i push it in, and pops back out at me nicely.

I also have an inspection due on my car, so im hoping that i can figure out what the problem is so that i can tell my mechanic to check it out! Any input is great, thanks!
-Andrew

It's the POS dual mass flywheel put in our cars not doing the job it is supposed to do (smoothing the pulses from the engine). It doesnt hurt the car and is basically normal.

Mine does that on an intermittent basis, the clutch works fine. For me it is a non-issue.

Just had new Clutch Masters FX 200 put in and its still doing it. I am not sure if the guy lined up the ultra light flywheel correctly. I am having one of the best in the business look at it this next week. He thinks they didn't line up the flywheel correctly and its clicking when the clutch is not engaged. Will let you know.

If you switched to a lightweight, one piece flywheel, then you more than likely won't get rid of the chatter.

I know its a different engine/tranny but my old R50 did this for about a month, than it got worse. But thats not all after it got realy loud the clutch pedal started vibrating, time to take it to the dealer imediately. The next morning I was backing out of my driveway (to go to Ralph Schomp MINI) when BOOM, my throwout bearing blew up and took out the clutch, flywheel, and 2 of the bolts holding the flywheel to the crank!!! Time for roadside assistance, thankfully the 100miles left on my waranty covered the damage. Iwould get an appointment and get it checked FAST.

I was just about to make a thread about this same issue.

I just recently bought an 06 MCS and it makes the same noise you just described. It currently has 10k miles on it.

My girlfriend has an R50 with the 5-speed and it makes the same noise just not nearly as loud as my new R53. I have driven many manual transmission cars and it is not uncommon to hear a slight, faint noise when the clutch pedal is out vs. in, but the noise is MUCH louder in my case.

Also, if it is actually the flywheel that is bad, why does it only make the noise when the clutch pedal is out and not all the time?

i have the exact same problem on my 06 MCS.

The best part is that the dealer just replaced my clutch, throw out bearing, and flywheel.

And guess what the noise came back after about 250 miles.

so far from what im seeing, its pretty normal...

i was thinking maybe it just needs some fluid... or idk... ill have my mechanic check it out anyways. my clutch is still in great working condition, guess the little chatter and ticking kinda bugs me!! lol.

keep the suggestions coming though! maybe someone has some deeper input on the situation...

If anybody asks just tell them it is because you have a bunch of lightened parts in there to make your car go fast.

zounds

Throwout bearing! & check it WELL when you get things ready to re-install. The stock Mini is plastic junk but actually IS pretty doggone quiet and works well (for normal people) for quite a while--considering . I'm at stage 3 w/ "the goods" & sounds like I'm raising rabbits under the floor board !! Cure ?? Good tunes and great exhaust lol

yea i still have yet to get it checked, but i was leaning along the lines of a pressure plate, bearing, etc. didnt really think it was a big problem, but ill have that checked. id love to go lighter and to a stage 2 or 3 clutch, but the noise itll bring will really just annoy me way to much to enjoy it. if my car wasnt a daily.... id be all over it.

I uploaded a video of the sound: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J55zPz5vL4I

The camera didn't do a great job recording how loud it is, but it is definitely alot louder than what you hear in the video.

I revved the car up slightly so you can hear how the frequency of the noise increases with motor speed.

Also, I have noticed that the car doesn't make the noise when the motor is cold and it doesn't appear until the motor is fully warmed up. Not really sure what that means in terms of what is directly causing the noise. Any ideas?

^mine isnt nearly as loud as that, mines just a little tiny chatter... guess mine is normal, but yours in the other hand is pretty loud. idk what it could be... look at the suggestions above, but i wouldnt ignore that.
