My Alta ssk has been on the car sicne the origianal owner bought it for almost 8 years and 85k miles with the dust cover off, I live in the north east where we get all kinds of dirt, snow, salt, etc and the only problem I've ever had was the shifter itself came lose inside the car. This has been talked about plenty of times so if you're not looking to spend a lot of money get the Helix kit and call it a day.

I agree that the dust cover is not really needed. The heat shield does a good job of keeping everything pretty clean. All of these short shifter kits work in the same manner. All they are doing is extending the arm from the pivot ball to reduce the length of the throw. The more extension the arm has the shorter the throw changing gears. Whenever you extend the arm the stock dust cover will not fit. Some cars that have the JCW exhaust have an additional problem because the resonator is right below the shifter body reducing clearance. All of the kits are using the ball in socket so their is no differance to the quality of the shifter feel. The only advantage to some of the kits is the adjustability to increase/decrease the length of the arm thereby changing the length of throw. IMHO this adjustability is not something that I would use. I would rather set it and forget it. The only other kit that may or may not have an advantage is the B&M kit with the steel bushings. These steel bushings replace the rubber mounting of the stock kit. Some have clamed added noise or vibration from the steel to steel contact. These bushings could be used with any of the shifter kits and from time to time some Mfg think about making them availabe but to my knowledge none have thus far.
For the price and ease of installation the Helix kit is hard to beat. When installing this kit you do not have to remove the ball from the socket so their is no chance in breaking the plastic ball socket that so many do. If you break that plastic ball socket the only way to get it is to purchase a complete OEM stock shifter assembly.
