So drove the car to work and stuff today, I'm not sure but it feels like the throttle response is better? Could this be possible by just changing the IC? Or maybe it's just that I spent a lot of money and I want it to feel better
I think the GP has better internal flow and thats what we feel

Working on that now, looks like a thin sheet of metal using the existing screw's on the diverter will work Already have cut a piece and attached it.
So this is what I came up with. The 2" gap is now gone, have about a .25" gap left. I think that is fine and my scoop is not going to rub In the close up pic it looks like it sticks up, but it dosen't. I think it came out pretty good
yank that sucker (the IC) off for a few days, send it to Cradin for a thermal dispersant coating. Will turn it flat black and help with heat transfer. Not much, but it's a cost effective mod. www.cradin.com
about 3 C, or about a 1% increase in air density. Just give them a call. I did mine a few years ago so I don't know about pricing now. Then it was less than $75 including shipping.

Cradin Coatings web site is down right now.

Cost? not on their site for intercooler, if you know

Just talked to Cradin. The standard Mini Cooper IC is $75, he said with all the different IC's sent to him he needs to see it in person or with a picture, with reference, to their e-mail, Info@Cradin.com ,
for exact costs. Thank's Matt Hmmm....wonder if they do it in red?.... Dang, Iv'e been hanging with Lynn to much...
Super nice work JIMMINI - Professional job in every respect.
What about adding a diverter plate to right side to send the air from the right side of the scoop to the IC cover opening ?
May help to fill the void and direct air to the SC fins.
Thanks I'm not sure a side diverter is needed? The foam seals it up very well so I think all the air has to go thru the coil? I'm not a expert though so.....what you think Matt, if the sides are sealed, will the pressure force everthing thru the coil?
if there's a difference, it's probably very minor. But it would look cool, and you'd probably get laid by a better class of girl at the show and shines, so on that score, it's a very worth while mod! ;)

Hey, Matt. I'm going to give this a try with the old stock IC off my old '02 MCS. Will let you know when it's done.

In theory, the directed air flow increaseed thru the coils should generate lower numbers and faster cooling from heat soak........especially if you are running a more aggressive scoop with larger opening.

Yeah, I read through that long 18-page thread on the five intercooler tests. On page 5, Banana Bart posted a picture of his welding a directional top to his IC. I'm also considering that mod down the road.

Hey, Matt. I finally got the intercooler off my old '02 MCS coated. Should be installed by the end of the weekend. Thanks again for the recommendation.

IMO save your money on the stock IC cover. It covers up the last few rows of the intercooler ( bit counter productive ? ) and really doesn't do much if anything with the downward flow of air.
I originally approached Alta for a diverter cover, and they were not interested stating they felt there was not enough of a market base for this part to be manufactured. Then DDM looked into it and came up with one instead. I finally went to Waymotorks web site and purchased one few months back.
* Before, the best post intercooler temps ranged 25-30 degrees above ambient temps....the DDM intercooler diverted lowered those running temps to just 8-15 degrees IMO this is an awesome combination.
( *In both cases with a M7 Extreme bonnet scoop )
Only issue so far has been the 4 rubber washers for the hold down screws which appear to be weathered and in need of replacing some time soon.
I added some black powder coated mesh. If you get down to the air flow angle looking thru the scoop, you can see the raised notches/cutouts in the screen which seem to provide some friction for the air flow giving it a moment of pause before making the downward flow thru the intercooler. While I found it didn't make huge gains, it did dress up the IC which was getting the usual patina to it. And it didn't make it hotter in the process...What I did find is that running temps dropped another 3 degrees when it rains. All I can think is that it tends to give a place for water to sit longer aiding in the cooling process thru evaporation. I may at some point add the old home made diverter sprayer I made few years back and give it a go again and try to duplicate this manually.
(The CRYO2 also seen here is quick way to freshen up the IC after a heat soak from being parked after a drive. There is a micro switch on the accellerator which activates the CRYO2 at WOT and there is another push button for manual over ride operation and one button for show spray I added for the heck of it - fires out the pass side Ociari cowl vent .)
I give DDM an A+++ for taking on this project. Job well done for an affordable and fully functional piece of modding equipment.

Thanks for the update. I finally broke down and bought the GP IC and DDM diverter just before MOTD 2011. I figure, combined with the M7 extreme scoop, it gives a great combination/bang/buck. The DoS IC is just too expensive to me. I also painted my GP IC with a can of Eastwood radiator paint, which has heat dissipation properties. You can read here for some data on how it helps: http://www.molalla.net/members/leeper/coatbar.htm.

what do you think of this system? cant find any threads on it... new thread???
Methanol is a much better solution IMO. You get the same intake charge cooling with the added benefit of a much higher fuel octane. It's also way easier to fill a tank with methanol than a bottle with compressed CO2.

+1 on meth, ive been running successfully with aquamist for three years, Ive purchased 3 different intercoolers, after meth, you want recovery time and stock does great with that.
