JCW intake with aftermarket filter?

I've sold all my mods from my Mazda 3 and have a bit of disposable cash to buy an intake for my MCS. My wife also drives the Mini and doesn't want me to make the car too loud, although she does appreciate a nice engine sound.

I was thinking that eventually, I want to do the full JCW Tuning kit, so why not start and just do the intake, and replace the paper filter with an aftermarket, higher flow model.

Would this yield any performance gains and improved engine tone? Let me know.

Also, who has the best price on the JCW parts and can ship to Canada?

Have not checked on a price at www.Minspeed.net in Florida for some time, but Pete was selling them for around $350.00 I think.

I have the Madness Motorworks filter in my JCW air box. IMO an excellent filter and since it is inside the JCW box the sound is muffled some. ( * I also did the flapectomy on the box - it is open all the time now instead of just opening around 4000 RPM's )

Filter is here: http://www.mini-madness.com/jcw-inta...placement.aspx

The OP has a 2nd generation MCS rather than a R53, right?

Heh.... I see the words "JCW", "intake", and "aftermarket filter" and I'm drawn like a moth to open flame!

i know MINI Madness has a direct replacement.

BrightWhite, i have not run a JCW Stage 1 intake on my car, but i had something that basically is that, DDMWorks Race intake, you will get a little, i stress the word little, sound increase with the higher flow filter in the JCW Stage 1 intake box... just because its made for flow, not noise. if you want to get some extra sound without being intense, there are lots of hot side boost tubes that could open up the sound of the engine area for you. catback might also do what you're looking for... Miltek would be the quieter of the ones out there, Alta is lower midranged sound, likewise with borla, and then there's others like exhaust depot, and most other exhausts are louder in nature... JCW may be your best catback option if that is what you're looking for.

If the JCW stage 1 is your objective, you can put an aftermarket filter on, with lots of companies making them. There was a lot of discussion about paper, oiled, dry, foam and KN. Frankly, I do not know how they really differ but I am happy with the Mini madness one I got. Just be careful as some filters, especially the foam ones, have some much oil dripping from it that they get it all over the inside of your intake.

As for the best thing to do to get a JCW stage 1, I would suggest morristown mini in New Jersey. They have their kit for $1680 plus 3 hours install (about $350). You could also put in a JCW suspension for $1000 and $369 install plus alignment. Come down to the US for a vacation with the Mini and return with a Mini JCW tuned car. Just takes about a day and they can provide a loaner. Heck, you can spend a day or two in the big apple.

I am running the JCW stage one intake and the MINI Madness performance filter. No real noise increase but performance increase.

Some people say that I will never get the money out of my MINI that I have put into it. I say, "I get my money's worth everytime I hit the ignition button".
