If you gotta ask, it's prolly too much work for you. Like Stig said, do it when you need clutch service, you'll save $$$ on labor.

It's a big job....

But going along with your question...who makes an aftermarket LSD for the 56?

I would say installing an OEM LSD would not be worth it, may as well get something good if you're gonna go through all the effort! OS Giken prolly would be the best choice. Does Cusco make one for the R56?

The LSD is about $1600. I myself will do it when the clutch needs to be replaced.

Installing the LSD in the R56 is just like the R53 - the hardest part is getting the gearbox out of the car. Once that is done, it's 'almost' a drop-in mod. Don't forget to get a pair of new carrier bearings - same ones as R53.

Stig one, you will be pleasantly surprised with the improvements using the Giken set-up.

For more information on the Giken, you can read about it here.

quaife also make a lsd, but its hard to get, if you order from a aftermarket parts company usually they will have to order directly from quafie and you have to wait a good while

as for about how much it will cost your looking at $1200-1600 for the lsd and another (estimating) around $1500-2000 for the install. as for installing i asked a shop last time they told me 2 to 3 days

Wow! Hate to say it but find another source for the Quaife LSD if they're charging more than ~1450. They're marking it up over 50% at $1600. Not here to move parts but now that I have a MINI and have searched on the board it seems like you guys are paying a hefty premium for the same brands products that the Japanese car guys get for 15%-20% over cost. A quaife diff doesn't magically go up in price for a dealer just because it's for a MINI. The model of the lsd fixes the price not the make of the car.

I can R&R a transaxle and install the diff in less than 6 hours. Get a os giken all the rest are junk.

Any Concerns with the OS Giken LSD not working well with the Factory JCW's E-Diff?

I have ordered the Giken LSD for my 09 JCW and have that nagging worry in the back of my mind the E-diff will go stupid.

What are you doing about the clutch as I was told there is not one for my JCW as I was going to to this as well... While the gearbox is out it makes sense to upgrade the clutch as my JCW is putting out a lot more torque than standard!

I found that too. My last track day the effectiveness of the e diff was less each lap after the brakes began getting hot. Also found it not as smooth with hard biting track pads. They seemed to be a little too effective too quick for the e diff and had trouble keeping up with the extra bite I think.

Surely tuning companies can disable the idiotic E-DLC?

I contacted quaife, they said they don't make their ATB for the R56, and they'd need at least 10 orders and a car to fab one up.

I wonder if the OS Giken is as good as the Quaife... I had a quaife on my R53, and it was absolutely phenomenal...

Also, the quaife uses helical gears, and the OSG is a clutch-type LSD...

Everything I've heard says the Quaife...while world's better than the stock LSD, doesn't even compare to an OS Giken or Cusco LSD. (on the R53's)

I have 2 friends who upgraded their worked K20 Honda Integra Type-Rs from Quaifes to OS Giken LSD's and I can tell you they will never go back to Quaife the OS Giken performs that much better.

So this is a done deal. The OS Giken is in hand along with the rest of the materials to complete the installation. I will drop of the MINI on Tuesday at the dealer to pull the transmission. I picked the dealer because they're most experienced at pulling the transmission and they responded to the job request. I contacted two other shops and no one wanted my money. I will get the transmission from the dealer and install the LSD myself. There are videos online showing every step of the process. It is really so easy that a caveman could do it!

While this work is being accomplished the dealer will be installing the front JCW sport suspension springs along with Vorshlag camber plates. I installed the rear JCW sport suspension springs last weekend so, along with the Bilstein HDs on all four corners, this completes the last of the suspension work.

Once everything is put back together my MINI customization work will be complete. I have finished every modification on my very lengthy list of modifications. Well I say complete now but we’ll have to see what RMW has in store for the R56 in the future.

Nice! Let us know how you like it! The OS Giken is a nice piece.

Well said...

There is a recent thread about putting a Quaife in an R56, and the general tone of that thread implies that the OS Giken is just a bunch of hype. While I can't speak for it in the R56...but in the R53, the difference between a Quaife and OS Giken is night and day. I know people that made the switch, and like you said...they said they would never go back to Quaife, cuz the OS is that good.
