The unit isn't really an "auto on" module so much as a "memory" module - it remembers when you turn Sport mode on and will keep turning it on each time you start the car until you turn Sport Mode off at which point it will leave it off until you turn it back on. This is great for rainy days or for cars that are shared between several people who have different preferences.
I just installed the one I got from amazingrando five minutes ago. On a mod difficulty scale of 1 to 5 with 1 being the addition of an antenna ball and 5 being an engine and tranny swap, this was a 1.5-2.
The directions were good but it was a little hard to get at that blue sport button wire and grounding bolt. Took about 30 minutes including reading instructions and putting away tools. Fired her up and I'm in SPORT mode

FES is making one based on our experience with the Ian Cull circuit. Ours does Sport Mode, DSC Control (including DTC and eDLC) and Stop/Start control (for cars in the EU). It also can control up to three electrical accessories using the same buttons (Sport, DSC and Start/Stop).
If you've already got a KBT or an Amazinggrando unit, we have an upgrade offer here.
Ours is a bit more ($54.95) than the KBT ($39.95 from KBTs site), and a bit less than the Amazinggrando (that's $59 from MachV) but does a lot more too. Whatever way you want to skin the cat, it's all good!
You can operate the accessory control from any button...
The way the buttons work on the car is that they are on a line pulled high (connected by a resistor to 12 vdc). The button shorts this to ground and this is what the car (and the circuit) senses. With access to power, you can do the same thing with our module. You'd have to wire appropriately, but yes it will work.
If you figure out how to put a factory button there, I'd love to know about it. Then others could get the factory look and have three channels of accessory control instead of just two.

Someone at motoring|underground was looking into it but I don't know if he has actually tried it yet. You should be able to simply use a factory switch from Europe: http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts...32&hg=61&fg=35. As a point of reference, RealOEM lists the US version at $67.50.
