6th Gear Swap - Lower Ratio

MCS 6-spd manual - I've got a 2007

I've done some research on this and it seems like we do not have much of a choice. Seen several post like this one but most are just asking for info and have no data. I have some data but may not have it all.

Please respond back only if you have info or can point me to the right place.

Here are my thoughts.

I Drive 2 freeways to work (1=60MPH is the avg speed / 2= 80+ish)

Need to get more a lower 6th gear ratio so that I'm not killing MPG. I know the MCS trans hard to work on but I've worked on SVT so I know it relatively well.

Attached is the info I found. It shows that per 2005MY Minis have a lower final drive and that post 2005 have the same final drive as the SVT Focus.

The Trans between the SVT Focus and MCS are internally the same. 2 separate final drives due to lay shafts. Also found info that Audi TT MAY have the same trans but given the data found it looks unlikely. Also found info on the Mini Diesel (must be sold in EU only) that shows different ratios but it does not seem like it it has the same design. If someone could confirm this it would help.

So it looks like there is a lower Final Drive available for 05+ cars you will actually be going back to ealier ratios. See attached "Pick Your" section.

I hate to lose the 1-2 gear accel so I was thinking of only swaping 6th gear for a lower ratio and maybe even putting the current 6th gear into where 5th is now.

So is their a 6th gear only swap out there??

Side note: if I add more power the 2.75 Final Drive may be good enough but for now I'm just looking to 6th.

I post this because I've done this before on a Mustang where I swaped the final drive from 3.27 to 3.73 and then put in a Chevy OD 6th gear (.5vs .62) in the T56 Trans and basically maintained/improved my Hwy MPG. Alot easier here but I'd like to gear the Mini how I want esp when I really start to Mod it.

If you're swapping cogs on the 1-2-5-6 mainshaft then you'll likely need a new laygear. As far as I know there's only one laygear for our 1st Gen Cooper S's; unless you get one cut to your specs.

I'd suggest you put your hazards on and do the speed limit on the 2nd HWY transit.

Yes its a cabrio R52.

Thought about getting my own shaft cut but was hoping just to find some tuner shop that had already done something.

Going slower will get me killed. You know the size of our car and funny thing is even the semi's are doing 75+ on the 2nd road. Besides I like to go fast. My avg speed on the car is now ~60mph. I was actually going to post something about that because I figured it was high compared to most.

Also I know about changing the tires (rolling radius, etc) but I want to keep all the same, except for the 6th gear.

I would check an R56 tranny. Although I haven't physically looked, I wouldn't be surprised if the gear cluster is identical dimension-wise.

The same diff fits in both.
