i cant believe people are still waiting for this product, its been so long and alta has continually promised that it will be soon, yet they continue to delay the release because its not done and probably never will be. on that note why would anyone want a ecu/pnp like cobb for subarus. cobb is the biggest bunch of crap and every moron who bought one should be shot.

Why is that? What was wrong with Cobb's AP?

I think its because they are all set to the same tune and are not set per car. Its a general tune in a can so to speak also i think the COBB actually tricked your cars sensors to gain power like the Unichip does. But dont hold me to that as im not massively clued up on the COBB PnP.

thats what cobb is priministar, its canned tunes that you download and install onto your car, if you have simple bolt ons and no tuning know-how its good, but you can make alot more horsepower by other ecus. The fact is, that this alta chip will be similar runs me off, i want something that i can actually gain control of the cars mapping myself not have a company send me a file

I agree with you, however...

It will take a lot for a company to give enthusiasts control of the cars mapping. That's a massive, massive liability, with all the morons who think they are expert tuners. I would sense a large mix of blown motors, and a good number of them who would try to sue the company for damages.

There's always the option of going with a standalone for someone who really wants to control mapping on their own and knows what they are doing.

no one makes a standalone :( what do you guys think if my company put together a mega squirt that would be a fairly easy install(as far as mega squirt goes). you would obviously lose all of the cool tach functions and lots of the user friendly things mini has on these cars but this would give full control of the cars ecu. i have been holding off on the thought that jan was getting his hand held tuner out soon, but i want engine control now lol

What?! No standalones available?

BTW, the AP is a sucessful product with a LOT of happy owners. People who buy something and get out of it what they wanted aren't morons who should be shot. I believe they're called the target market.

I had a COBB AP on my STI and I can tell you it was AWESOME. Additionally, note that I was NOT using a canned map (though I did have several friends who ran them successfully, albeit they ran rich imho); the best part of the AP, aside from accessibility, is that it could accept custom maps from COBB approved vendors (Power Commander in the motorcycle world is probably the closest parallel... expect the PC is an inline device as opposed to the AP, which ghosts over the ECU's stock program). I had a custom map on my Stage 2 STI from GST Motorsports (one of the best Subie tuners with an AWD dyno in Bay Area). I had NO, I repeat, NO problems with my AP tune ever. I was pushing like 250hp and 293 tq (mustang dyno) and loved every bit of it...

I think what he means is that you can't just replace the ECM with a standalone, since everything in the Mini sits on the Canbus & is inter-reliant.
Modern European cars are nothing like the prehistoric tech you find in Asian imports. The latest milestones and radical changes found in the 2010 Subaru's were neat 10 years ago when they were implemented by Saab. What worked in you old WRX is not going to carry over to an R56/55/57.

back on topic...
Is Perrin getting ready to dump the Alta brand ? given the recent blowout sale and the lack of new or revised products coming to market, you have to wonder if they're pulling the plug or going out of business.

i initially thought the same thing when i saw a 50% off sale, but its a shame perrin has gone down the path they have, i know that about 3-4 years ago perrin was a great company after the alta situation it seems like perrin has went down the same lack of customer support path. I know my brother has de-perrined his entire car now.

The reason i dont like AP, is for a few reason...most people run canned tunes which is great for people with simple bolt-ons, yes you can modify the cobb maps and yes its tunable but only to a degree. the fact of the matter is you dont have control over the car, you are still modifying the output signals on your stock ecu.

As well? We don't have any ALTA brand products that are made in China (maybe some hardware). Most products are made here on the west coast....some even manufactured locally.

I dont think Alta's ECU will ever materialize. They also mentioned that they will come out with a new DP that will minimize the annoying drone coming from there exhoust.

Ha Ha. Don't ask till next summer if you dont want to hear the same thing from Alta. This wont happen for a long time, same goes for the RMW handheld. Its all crap to keep you holding on.

Even if Alta does come out with a flash unit, they'll never catch up to Jan when it comes to experience tuning the new Mini. Jan's on the road every week dyno tuning every conceivable combination of mods and at the track podium proving his work. Jan's even unlocked the Euro/JCW/Challenge car pop & burble for the regular MCS, Alta can't even get their cat's to work w/o throwing a p0420

Any solid updates from an Alta person not just someone who thinks they know what is going on.
