Sonichris, what do you think about the EBC Yellow ? Could you describe your feeling about them ?

I'm just about to do the same conversion on my R53 (thanks to your explanation) and I'm wondering which pads to use. I do 3 to 4 trackdays a year and I used to have Ferodo DS2500 which are great pads. So I'm a bit affraid of having fading or so. What I read about Yellowstuff is very positive and I'd liked to have your opinion.

Thanks again for all the details you gave in this thread !

i have not taken the yellows to the track yet, so i cannot give you a proper track day evaluation. i was actually going to use the ferodo ds2500 pad but i could not wait for them to become available for R56 or JCW, so i went with my second choice, the ebc yellows. by the way, just did a quick google search and i still did not see where the ferodo front pads are available....

as far as the yellows on street, nothing but positive reaction here! i have enormous braking power now, and very good cold bite. even on a few emergency stops this winter they held very strong, the initial bite was actually stronger than the greens (probably due in part to the larger piston of the R56 caliper), and unlike the ebc greens i had, the grip got even stronger towards the end of a long stop. i have been able to just hit the ABS threshold on dry pavement with my 225 section BFG KDW2s. i almost felt like the car was up on the front wheels with the rears dangling in the air it stopped so quickly! i've had no noise issues and dusting seems to be better than stock but a little more than the greens (from what i could tell with the stock wheels, i have black wheels for summer and can't see the dust anymore).

sorry i can't provide track data, but they do seem up to the level of a street/light to medium duty track pad. the only issue i have read about is higher wear at the track, but i read that a while back, don't even remember if it was on minis or not.

Hi,
I must say this is very good mod for the 300 bucks with 2 complete of pads.

I get used ones for my friend, they were actually as new. The difference is worth the money.

Thank you Sonichris. I did the same search for pads as you did before. The latest news I got is from Mintex : they will release M1144 within the next 2 month for the R56S brakes. I also asked Ferodo but I haven't received any answer yet.

so now, all i need to get is some good pads and i can slap them on there.
FYI the R53 from August 2006 production on uses M14 bolts (Not the M12 bolts from all models previous), and should be a direct swap to the R56 brakes.

the point i was making was that M12 vs M14 won't make a difference.

Yea, I didn't think so, even if the holes are bigger it's just a slide-over fit anyway, the wheel is what holds the brake rotor on (Along with the little allen bolt). Just pointing it out.

So where Is the reccomended source for The R56 brake calipers?
I can find the rotors and pads pretty easy i just havent found a good source for the calipers
also when i do get all this together should i even care about changing the back pads out?
Should i just go to the Mini Stealership in irvine and ask for the parts?

Strange, because I received the info directly from Mintex.

BTW, now I have all the parts (not so easy to have the brake hoses !) and next weekend, I'll put these all together on my car. Yipee

Yesterday, I just had the time to service my rear calipers and put the EBC Yellow pads

depends how much you want to spend. i'm a cheap bastard so i just waited until i found a set for sale. you could just go to a dealership if you want to. i didn't do anything to the rear pads, just used the same compound as the front.

The stealership here in irvine quoted me at 400 dollars even for just the two front Calipers no brackets just calipers
thats kinda alot because i would need rotors and lines and possibly mounts
and then pads its looking like i could seriously just buy the Jcw complete and have it come out to about the same price
SO if anyones selling a set or sees one on ebay please please let me know because im seriously in need of a cheap upgrade.....

Thanks guys,
Colin

Check the marketplace here for a set of takeoffs. As more R56's hit the road there will be calipers floating around. I saw a set for $300 including rotors and pads. JCW Brakes are also going to take a dive because they're identical to the R56 brakes, thus not really worth the $1100 that they cost new .

Do you track your car at all? I ran the stock brakes on my car until recently with no issues on the track. It's only when you get to the bigger tracks that brake fade really becomes an issue.

I'd suggest swapping out your pads to some high temp Carbotech pads (Bobcat's or AX6 if you're really gonna use them on the street, The 08's work well on the track too) and high temp fluid. If all you're looking for is more bite on the street I think you'll find that a pad swap will meet or exceed your expectations.

You're welcome to PM me or I'll keep replying to whatever threads you happen to post in if I catch them, doesn't matter either way .

For the money if you're going to spend more than the 350-400 on R56 brakes just grab a Wilwood set off Todd at TCE. If you don't mind the color he's got a nice set for sale now discounted (It just happens to be purple). He's actually using a photo that I shot at AMVIV to showcase them .

The primary reasons that i wanted to upgrade the brakes was that i want to track the car at SOW. and to make the car fill the wheels a little better.
the reason why i decided to do the R56 brakes was because it was cost effective and because their would always be a source for pads of all kinds for the car.
What do you think sir? I hope your super secret engine project gose well?
say arent you the guy with 270 whp?

Done !! Thank you again, Sonichris !!

That was a nice day working on the car : I swapped the original front brakes for the R56s, I have bleeded all the brake system and made an oil service to my car. That's enough.

Well, the combination of the new calipers and the EBC Yellow pads works great. The braking power is just awesome compared to the original (even with DS2500 pads). I'm more than happy !!

Few pics :

I finally got round to putting them on yesterday, first time brake job so I took my time.
It went very well with no problems, got the S/S lines from Detroit Tunned
If it's not raining tomorrow I'll take some photo's

Going from stock brakes with 45K worn to hell and back, the difference is amazing
