With the power (torque) and gas mileage gains seen by the introduction of the 2007 turbocharged MINI, would one see similar gains in power and gas mileage with the pre 2007 models if one removed the supercharger and replaced it with a turbo? Or, are the engines so dissimilar that the effect would not be the same?
You would get a whole lot of kick-in-the-pants.... many people have dropped the SC in favor of the turbo for big power gains. Look at www.fireballed.com as an example. You can also keep the SC and add a turbo, known as TC (Twin-Charge).

Well I get 25-30mpg with my conversion now. I run a GT28 turbo which is a LOT bigger than the K03 that is on the new '07s too.
I have not dynoed, and have no plans to, but I can say that when the turbo spools and boost is turned up high you can't reach for the dashboard cause the torque is pushing you in the seat so hard.....
