I believe the word "Detailing" must be derived from a Latin word meaning "Smart A$$". As in - "Man that's a smart looking donkey".

As for the original question in the thread...

Windex is no good for the plastic trim in the car if used over time. Clarity (or any quality automotive galss cleaner like Sonus or Eimann Fabrik) won't damage the trim.

clarity by vote does seem like it is the winner. even OC guy likes it.

I use the old oc guy's recommendation of Meguiar's NXT window cleaner. Its awesome, ultra cheap, smells nice, and the sprayer bottle is refined for how cheap the price is.

If you watch the DVD from "Bulldog Garage" about detailing (and if you haven't, why haven't you?), one of the pithier (not lisping here) pieces of advice is:

"never use anything that's under the sink to clean your car, and don't use car cleaning stuff to clean your bathroom" or words to that effect.

In addition to ammonia, Windex has dyes in it to make it blue. It takes a lot more rubbing to get that off your windows than if you use a "gin-clear" cleaner like Clarity.

Well I use Clarity all over the house. Mirrors, windows, TV screens, monitors, microwave, cooktop etc. I also use Slick, Hydro and Epic in the house on counters and appliances. So how's that for pithy?

Yeah, I'll agree with the first part of that... you'll never catch me using household cleaners of any kind on our MINIs. However, I don't hesitate to use Clarity on mirrors and glass in the house (although only the ones that company will see so as not to waste the precious liquid on surfaces that don't deserve that kind of treatment).
