Touch Up Paint...Hot Orange?

Has anyone tried touching up "Hot" Orange (metallic) on the Convertible? I got a customer that got a little chip, and the local dealers don't sell touchup in that color. I'm thinking that probably it will have to be mixed up at a body shop...just wondering what anyone else may have done.

Richard

I found "paintscratch.com" yesterday doing a google search. I'm in need of Space Blue Metallic touchup paint for my 06 MCSa that was scratched when the side was struck by a rope that was hanging off the back of a moving truck!

They say they use actual OEM formulations...plus they also send the complete kit consisting of the base, the clearcoat, lacquer thinner, and rubbing compound to smooth it all out once the clearcoat has cured.

Just ordered it yesterday, should receive it sometime next week. Will post results.

OctaneGuy, if you fix your customer's cabrio, please post before and after photos...I'd love to see how a detailing pro does, and I'd love to see your technique...I hear it isn't the easiest thing to touch up car paint.

I just got some paintscratch touch-up in Space Blue and used it...matched perfectly.

One thing I've noticed with their site, if your color is not listed for your year, try a different year. I had to get some Alpine White for my roof and it's not an option for my 04, but it's there for 06.

Yup...I've used paintscratch.com as well. A little expensive, but so far so good.

Good question... I ordered the 1 oz jars with the built-in brush because I thought that would allow better control when applying the paint than a touch-up 'pen'.... also, if the area is just a tiny scratch, I might even use a thin-bristled hobby paint brush used for painting small details.

BTW, I ordered from paintscratch.com on Thursday, they sent me an e-mail saying it was shipped on Friday, so I can expect it by Tuesday/Wednesday at the latest...that's FAST service.

You can match just about any auto paint color with nail polish which is tough stuff, and it's cheap. Check your local drug store or beauty supply shop.

Using a toothpick to apply touchup paint is also a very popular method.

^^+1 for applying touchup, I also use a tooth pick. i tap the point to make
it flat so it retains paint better. ive seen places like Griots sell fine touchup
applicators, but imho, you want to use capillary action than actually
stoking the applicator to fill the chip.

www.paintworldinc.com had faster turnaround than www.paintscratch.com
from my experience.

Wow... I'm in New Jersey, www.paintscratch.com ships their orders out of California. I ordered on Thursday, the package with the paint arrived today, Monday afternoon... now that is FAST.

If I have time, I'm going to apply it later this week or this weekend. I'll try the blunt toothpick trick for the fine scratches. The bottle says ambient temps need to be above 50 F for at least 24 hours continuously for proper application... it's about 50 during the day but at night we're talking upper 30s... I may have to wait until spring if I want to do it right.

rock on,

I have tried it and it does work but does not match exactly. Too dark orange.

you can use a heat lamp (i use those cheepo's for plants...my buddy
has a green house and gave 2 for free. ) to heat up the panel until
it's warm to the touch. after it's dry, enamel actually cures faster in
the colder temps from what ive found.
