what to start off with?

Ok, so I want to be prepared when my MINI comes in - after all this fuss about Zaino and how great it is, it's what I'd like to try first. However, I'm not sure what I need! Any pointers? There are so many products on the site that I'm sort of confused. What should the steps be/what should I spend my money on that I'll get the most use out of? I'm on a budget!

That depends on your budget, the time you want to devote to detailing your car, and of course how nuts you are.

Z2 is the base product that you need. Everything else is more of an "accessory" but useful.

I think the absolute basics are:
-Z2 Pro for sure.
-Z6 for quick detailing. You need to QD so use this since it is made to compliment the polymer sealant.
-Z7 wash is phenominal! It really keeps up the slickness of feel everytime you wash. Washing with other shampoos that may have carnaubas in them will lead to possible smearing. (It's always safest to match brands that you use.)
.............

ZFX is a must-have for me because it allows multiple coats (and helps with bonding) in a single session. I can wax my car with 2-3 coats in half an afternoon.

I also am hooked on the new Z8 spray sealant. It has cured my frequent water spot issues on my black roof. I use it weekly. Great smelling, too.

I would agree with BradB - ZFX, Z2 Pro and Z6 would be the minimum. I use a lot of the Z6; during clay bar use, the waxing process and as a QD. I tend to use up a bottle very quickly even though I'm using just a small amount per panel - I QD almost obsessively.
I started my Zaino purchase with one of their deluxe kits since it had the leather stuff in it for my wife's SUV. I think the starter kit would be fine though. Oh and I use the tire/vinyl stuff a lot too (can't remember the Z number). I had some of the Z8 but I just didn't see the justification for the $20/bottle when it did basically the same job as the Z6. I think their Z7 car shampoo is top notch as well.

I feel like I've learned to code-talk with all these Zaino numbers.

let's not forget some high quality microfiber towels...

as everyone said already.. .Z2 is your bread and butter, Z6 is the in between sealant spray to keep up the deep shine, but i'd put Z7 on instead of Z8, even though personally i never tried Z8, i think the Z7's wash is much more important, as you wash the car once every week, it is important the car wash be aligned with the sealant you are using
