Weird Goo on Boot revisited for Cabrio

I found the one link discussing this weird goo:
http://www.northamericanmotoring.com...weird+goo+boot

but I don't know if it's the same problem as mine since it's a Cabrio.

I do know about the two drain holes on the inside of the tailgate, and am not sure if it's coming out of those or not. If so, it's only coming out on the right side.

The weird goo appears under the tailgate, runs down the bumper with a weird path and off. When I went to wash it today, some of it comes off, but it's more 'scratchy' than goo. It took some scrubbing and it's still not all off, but I'm afraid to rub too hard I'll scratch the paint.

1- has anyone else had this happen on their cabrio?

2- suggestions for getting it off without marring the paint? (I don't have Zaino and clay scares me at the moment)

Thanks in advance!
-Sarah

cosmaline?

If it is what my MA referred to as "ear wax colored," it is probably cosmaline. I have a Pepper White car so the stuff stained the paint. The dealer will clean it up for me whenever I get there, but the MA said diluted paint thinner would do the trick (and he can do that so if it screws something up, it will be up to him to resolve the matter.) Clay didn't work, tar remover didn't work. Yes, it took the heavy gunk off, but it did nothing for the stain.

Then I had something dripping off both the front and rear washers...which I have never used! The front drip seems to have eaten through the clear coat. The back leak ate through some of the cosmaline gunk that was stuck on the chrome...sort of a MINI self help thing, I guess.

There have been several complaints about the washers leaking with '05s and MINI knows about it.
