Hi all,

How in the devil do you clean the sunroof gasket? I have all the "right stuff" , micro fiber, etc... But the texture of the gasket grabs every little bit of fuzz from the wash, wax and dry towels. Looking at other Minis I can see this a common problem...ideas??

Davbret,

Why do you have all the stuff taped up?

dominicminioopers: Davbret is taping up all the plastic moldings and chrome and such to prevent wax from ever getting on that stuff in the first place. Thus, you then don't have to figure out how to clean the wax residue off.

Davbret, what type of wax are you using?

I'm a Meguiar's man. First use Deep Crystal system step one, paint cleaner. Then use No. 7 Show Car Glaze. Then Gold Class wax (2 coats over two days). I use a DA polisher to apply/remove.

BTW, I used Mother's Back to Black last night and LOVE it! It makes the black mouldings brand freakin' new again! You can wipe it on without worry about getting it on the paint. Give it a few minutes to "dry" and then you can just buff it off the paint with a clean towel/cloth. I now have 2 products I absolutely LOVE: Mother's Back to Black and Stoner's Invisible Glass.

I have masking tape and Zymol and I'm not afraid to use it!

That's this afternoon's little project.

Oh, and a clay bar.

So my plan is:

- Wash the car (done already)
- mask the car
- Zymol Carbon Wax

I'm with Davbret in agreeing on how good Mother's Back to Black is. I'm more of a 20/20 glass person myself though.

I finished the waxing this afternoon. I must say, I think there is something to Davbret's masking tape madness.

It did take a little longer in the set-up, but once that was done, everything after that was a breeze. In fact, since I was doing a two coat wax application, I think it actually took less time than it would have if I hadn't taped. Even if I were doing only one coat, I would do the Davbret tape method because it just makes for a lot less agravation when you don't have to worry about the wax getting on the textured plastic or in between the lettering for "Cooper S" on the back.

So props to Davbret.

OK, one more silly Q. If it's to protect the chrome and plastic, why aren't the headlights covered?

hi all,

we just waxed the new silk green cooper. i use zymol on several older cars i have that have oxidized paint, however, we just used the pure carnuba turtle wax for the new car. some of the zymols have abrasive compunds for removing old paint in them esp. the "cleaner wax" liquid. i would NOT use that on anything new. just good old carnuba wax!

good suggest about the forever black. gonna get some of that...

best,

curt

I actually took the picture and then realized I hadn't gotten to the headlamps. I did in fact tape them as well.

RE: Zymol cleaner wax.

Here's their e-mail response to me. I asked--is it safe for my new MINI? And also, what to use for my wife's oxidized-looking car. Thought it'd be helpful to you guys.

Jeff

---------------
The cleaner wax is fine for your new car however the HD cleanse is a much
more effective cleaner. HD cleanse is non abrasive. It will be good for both
your new car and your wifes car that is in need of help. HD cleanse only
goes after the bad paint ( oxidation swirl marks and dead paint. After the
HD cleanse you would then follow with one of our paste waxes or estate
glazes.
To find retailers of the Zymol products in your area go to the Zymol web
site click to embrace the passion on the left hand side of the page click
site map then look at 11:00 on the kiosk click where to buy this will show
you authorized resellers in your area.
Happy motoring
Zymol

OK, just did the Meguirs stuff yesterday in the garage on my Neon (selling it or trading it in on the MCS). Took me 4 hours to wash, polish and wax. Single coat on each. Today I'm sooo sore I can barely move my arms. Kind of like the Karate Kid in movie 1 after he waxes all those cars. Ow!

BTW, the results are wonderful. I can't wait to get my MCS and to do it to it.

Hence why I use a DA polisher.

Hoping the old addage kicks in, that the only stupid question is the one that isn't asked: What's a DA Polisher? Is it an orbital polisher? My next question: Is there any fear of polishing marks & scrathes?

I already asked what DA Polisher and received no response. So my only guess is that it is an inside joke. "DA" probably stands for Distributed-ARM Action or somesuch kinda like the old addage "elbow grease".

DA means "dual action". That typically means it spins and orbits at the same time in a random pattern thereby eliminating the possibility of burning the paint (like a rotary buffy will). Some paint polish compounds are only for use "by hand" vs "with rotary". A DA polisher can be used with anything that requires "hand" application.
