AGH! Melted Bonnet Stripe, Touch-up?

took a rock in my windscreen yesterday and went to Autozone to pick up a quicky windscreen repair kit. well when I finshed filling in the hole, I pulled the repair unit off and some of the caustic liquids splattered onto my black bonnet stripe, and melted right thru. now I have 4 small white spots on my bonnet stripe and Im kicking myself for not being more careful (although the windscreen is fixed.)

question: can vinyl bonnet stripes be touched up, and where can one go to have this done? Thanks in advance, Jimbo

I took a chunk of road debris a while back and got a white scratch on my black stripe. I used a sharpie to color it black, and then zaino'd right over it.

What color are your stripes?

I have OEM black stripes. These are made of white vinyl with the black color simply printed on. Every time a rock hits the stripe it nicks through the black layer and leaves a white spot. I was bummed at first and looked into getting them fixed or replaced under warranty - unfortunately, no luck. The best solution I could find was to CAREFULLY use a Sharpie felt marker to to color the black spot. If your stripes are also black and you try this approach, be sure to keep the pen only on the white spots - don't get any on the black printed area because the marker will look purple (bad).

Whatever you do, don't attempt to use regular automotive touch-up paint on the stripes. It will eat through the vinyl and damage your paint.

From what I could tell, the only complete solution is to replace the stripes, which are relatively cheap and resonably easy to install. There have been other threads on NAM by folks that have done this. There are various sources from which to purchase new stripes besides the dealer - Mighty Stripes and Moss to name a couple.

Any professional vinyl guys out there with some other ideas? I would also love to hear about any magic fixes. Is the stuff that they use to print the black onto the white vinyl available in small quantities?

Good luck!

Edit: Whoa! You beat me to it asodestrom.

Check out a craft store. They probably have one.

If you scratch a black stripe it will be white. If you scratch a white stripe it will still be white, but if you must fix it, you could go to an office store and get some white-out:smile:

PS BTW the rock hit my car at 1250 miles....

for those of us who wish not to pay the big $$ for Zaino, could this work using Megs NXT? It may not be Zaino, but it's pretty damn good. jimbo

I think if you patch them, the patches will stick out like sore thumbs!

Why not just remove the stripes for a while. You'll feel like you're driving a different car! A few months later, you can put some new stripes on -- maybe even a different style this time. They really aren't that expensive...

but these 4 spots are really pretty small, similar to the tiny body dings that I touch up OK. they're not huge blotches that would look really craptacular if one attempted a Sharpie repair...

I agree with asodestrom that you can do quite a respectable repair job with a Sharpie. - even though it may sound hokey offhand. If you want a nearly free remedy, the Sharpie method will give surprisingly good results. BTW Sharpies are available with fine tips. And, like any touch-up, you've got to to be precise with the application of the product (don't glob it on!). If you want absolute perfect you'll need to spend a little money, either buying new stripes or paying a vinyl shop for a repair.

White-out, hah. I wonder what issues that might have with the paint, if any...

The white scratches block. Cuz my car is black. it's just a small tear basically. It showed up at probably 2000mi. It probably would have been a paint scratch if the stripe wasn't there. That's why I have a clear bra too but it doesn't cover the stripes.
