I use 303 Cleaner. Warm the engine (not hot), spray 303 everywhere and agitate with a detailing brush and rinse. Dry everything or use compressed air to dry. Then apply 303 Protectant to hoses and plastic with a soft cloth of sponge then wipe dry. Be sure to disconnect the battery and cover the alternator, I use foil because it molds nicely.

I'm pretty fastidius about keeping the engine clean. I primarily use Simple Green to wipe the engine bay down usually every other day or so. This works well as long as you don't let the grime build up.
If it's been raining when I've been out MINI-ing I try to hit the engine ASAP.
So do I. Well that is once on the engine. In the last 39000 miles I've cleaned my engine bay the one time (at about 33k miles...yeah yeah...I know that's a long time to go without cleaning) and it still looks great!
Wet everything down. Spray liberally with Simple Green. Clean with a cloth towel. Rinse and repeat where there's pretty tough deposits. Works well for me.
Kalvin, if you need help, come on over one of these weekends and I can show you all about it. I have a gallon of undiluted Simple Green at my disposal.
I often use WD-40 on the metal and plastic stuff, especially around wiring and connectors. A light spray and wipe off the excess. Leaves no greasy residue and keeps stuff from corroding. Makes the cast aluminum pieces look better too. Keep it away from rubber items. Also, when waxing the car, I open the hood and do the painted areas underneath, especially around where the weather seals make contact. This keeps them from sticking and squeaking. Use compressed air to blow bugs and dirt out of the intercooler, radiator and condensor, and flat tweezers to straighten bent fins.
