I detailed the MINI two days ago. It sat in the garage overnight. Yesterday I had magnetic stripes on for about 4 hours in 78 degree weather. Parked in the shade or moving most of the time. I take the stripes off last night and when I go out to it this morning I see this! What can I do if anything?

- Pic is posted below thanks to Pebbles -

It looks like damage to the clear coat. I have two coats of wax on it done by a detail shop. The paint is completely smooth to the touch in the affected area.

Maybe you can buff out that red x?

Sorry, just kidding. The pic did not post correctly.

Can you explain what happened?

looks like one of 2 things:

either the magnetic material had some sort of residue on its surface that has attached itself to the waxed paint

or that it pulled up some of the wax, leaving this blotchy looking surface

If it is the first case, try a little goo-gone and see if it comes off

If the second, re-wax and buff smooth.

I'll have to agree with Yucca on this one. Look s like some oil from the magnet or something of the like?

and if it matters to you, the goo-gone will remove some of the waxed finish, so re-waxing is probably in order, especially as it sounds like you are a big fan of a thick coat of quality wax on your paint.

Good luck! I'm sure this is not as disastrous as it probably felt like when you first saw it!

and one more thing. . .

before you re-install the magnetic stripes, I would clean and scrub the bottom side of them to remove whatever might have been on them to cause this. Again, goo-gone or simple green will likely do the trick!

I'm sorry I have an older type 19" Sony flat screen Trinitron Monitor
and because of the size of your photo I can't tell what you are showing us.

Oh, but I know, I'll save your photo to my computer and I'll resize it for you!
That's the ticket!!
I'll resize this to something like 900 pixels wide which will still be large
but about 90% of the phone will be seen on the average screen.
(everyone sees the little wheels turning as she turns on the grey matter)

Thanks for the image re-size Pebbles.

I tried Goo-gone to no avail. I then tried stripping the wax with Dawn and washing it a few times but still nothing. The damage seems to be a part of the paint (can't feel any raises or pitts in the damaged area).

I have an appt with my dealer on Wednesday to replace the passenger rear-window (never sealed correctly). Guess I'll ask about re-painting the hood.

I also have a bird mark on the hood. The droppings were there less than 3 hours and they became a permanent part of the hood. Best detailing shop in town didn't charge me for an hour of labor 'cause they couldn't fix it. Maybe I have bad paint. Magnetic stripes are going away.

Thanks for the suggestions folks - I appreciate it.

You are welcome -
I'm the Queen of huge photos.
Obviously, You haven't seen some of the photos I posted when I first joined!
I'd post and go back and nearly die at the size of it!
I'd send my family an email of a digital photo and get 10 people telling me what I can do with it!

Then only after I burnt up the mother board on my old computer, I had to buy a new computer (kept the old monitor, just got computer, mouse and keyboard)...
well, it came with photo software that has a place to resize the photos!
I hit IMAGE and then RESIZE
I usually set it to like 600 or 800 wide to e-mail them nicely.

Have a good day!

Nate,

Just ghot your PM. Dumping your magnetic stripes is a good thing. Now for your more pressing issues -- and according to your pics, they're pretty serious! Try the claybar route first, it's the easiest and less damaging. If all fails try the following process a buddy of mine recommends (not for the faint of heart!):

Color sand your finish with 2000 grit paper, eagle or meguiars paper is the best. Water sand the finish until it is completely dull, you will be sure to remove all texture your finish might have. Buff with a 1750 rpm buffer, start off with a wool pad and a good synthetic compound like 3M perfect it 3, buff out all gunk to a shiny "swirly " finish. Next use a foam compounding pad and the synthetic compound. Next use a foam waffle polishing pad like 3M # 05725 and 3m glaze # 05996. When you are satisfied with the results, do the Zaino process (including Dawn). Good luck and let us know how it works for you.

PS: you may want a professional detailer to perform this for you.....

[Pebbles is such a size-queen! ]

Ok, back to the emergency: You can:
1. put the stripes back on and pretend nothing happened (not likely)
2. try a clay bar first, and if not, try a swirl-mark remover, and if that doesn't work, you're just about stuck with fins4284's process above (yikes!)

Good luck,
Ryan

From what it looks like, the paint oxidized directly under the stripe. It would appear smooth to the touch, especially after a couple coats of wax sealing it in. But my experience with MINI paint leads me to further believe that a clay bar/paint deoxidizer won't work. The paint just doesn't have alot of play in it to work with. And if you go the route of sanding, you'll have two areas on your hood without the orange peel the rest of the car has, free of charge from the factory paint job. So where does this leave us...? Since you've already washed with Dawn, try a clay bar, then a paint cleaner, like Meguiars step one in the deep crystal line, which you can get at GI Joes.

Also to note, I've found that dual action orbital buffer just doesn't work well with the MINI's paint, which prefers the more drastic rotary buffer....something best left to an expert.

Thanks for the advice all -

I tried claybar after stripping the wax but nada. I'm thinking my detailer will not be able to do anything with it either. I have an appt. on Wednesday at my local dealer and I guess I'll ask them who they recommend to re-paint the hood - I think I can get away with having the hood painted only.

Thanks all - I'll let you know how it goes.

NuWay Body on Couch and MLK (or is it Grand?) is where you need to go for MINI paint work in Ptown.

I've been to NuWay for body work on another car and I actually wasn't really impressed. However, since he now has a MINI and a good recommendation I'll at least go by and talk to him.

I'm a little worried about having that MINI orange-peel look to the paint effectively duplicated since I only want to paint the hood.

What about swirl mark remover? Ryan recommended the 3M Perfect-It when I had a bug-guts-hazing-the-paint episode. Like you, the finish was perfectly smoothe to the touch, but it was, well, hazy. The 3M stuff did the trick and, if it works, it's ALOT less expensive than a re-paint.

PDXMINI!!!!

This EXACT SAME THING happened to my Jet Black MINI Bonnet after putting magnetic stripes on for just 4 hours!!

The effect on your bonnet is exactly the same as was on mine.

I called Sal Zaino, because I had used Zaino polish on my MINI previously, to see if he had any ideas what to do.

He did. He recommended using 3M Swirl Mark Remover for Dark Cars (Part #39009 I believe...it is available at Pep Boys, about $12.00-$14.00 a bottle). After trying clay bar (didn't work), Dawn detergent (didn't work), goo-gone, (didn't work), I was furious because NOTHING removed the marks.

I went out and bought the 3M Swirl Mark Remover and after the first swipe on the bonnet, MARKS WERE REMOVED!! I was so relieved that something finally removed the ghosting.

Of course, I threw out the magnetic stripes and swore to never use them or recommend them to anyone...how could I after what they did to my car?

Anyway, before using grit and sandpaper and buffing wheels all that potentially harmful stuff, try the 3M Swirl Mark Remover for Dark Cars. Put a dime size on a cotton applicator pad -- rub in gently, and rub off with the clean side of the pad. The ghosting should disapear. Then of course, re-wash the car, dry, and re-apply your favorite wax.

-Joe

I'm not saying to buy the product from this company, I just want to show you what the 3M Swirl Mark Remover looks like... buy it wherever you prefer... I found it at my local Pep Boys.

This stuff is a must for anyone who is crazy enough to continue using magnetic stripes on their car.

Rock On,

Joe

Omtoast & boognish -

Thanks for the recommedations - I will try anything.

boognish - I also use Zaino products on my MINI so the fact that you had the same issue with your JB MINI, and got results with the 3M swirl remover gets me pretty stoked. Especially because I already came to grips with paying for the re-painting.

I'll let you know when I try out the swirl remover.

Thanks again!
