Restoring trim

Tried back to black and the trim looked great!.... for like 4 days then looked like it was before, not to mention the dust build up after that, parts of the trim is turning white, should i just paint it? my friend used some kinda auto trim spray pain on his jeep and it turned out great looked like new not just black
I read that other post were people used something but will it restore? i really hate having the trim look sun bleached

Black Wow. It will restore the trim and lasts several weeks, if not months.

yeah BW is great on the skirts and fenders, nothing beats it. but doesn't seem to hold up well on the roof line.

unless you use a trim dye that griot's sells, i would stick with BW.

the forever black is a trim dye though probably very close to griot's if not the same. i just can't get my roofline rubber to stay black it always looks ashy gray. BW on the roof line lasts less than a few days. i LOVE my BW but, hate my roof line !

sorry for the hi-jack, the link to forever black made me do it . i'm going to try it.

I use Meguiars Vinyl and Rubber Cleaner/Conditioner. Works great, even on the roof trim, and has UV protection built in.

i ordered some forever black and should have it soon. i had a buddy over yesterday and his MINI's roof line rubber was nice and black. he uses BW on it. however my roof rubber is like 1/2 grey in comparison. if you look at my roofline the top 1/2 is all ashey and NOTHING - including BW- will work on it. it will look black for a couple days then , the greay band returns. it looks almost like a grey "stain" running around the rubber trim. i'm hoping that dying it with the forever black works out for me and i can maintain it from there. the kit includes a rubber cleanser. i'm thinking the previous owner of the car used something on it that stained the trim permanantly. to the casual observer it probably isn't too noticeable. to me though it drives me crazy.

If the trim around the top of the glass (not the rubber strip above the windshield as BW isn't meant for rubber) is grey--they you need to REMOVE the polish/wax residue there.

I demoed my new precleaner at the Dragon this past week. One squirt on a MF towel, and one swipe and all the wax was off, and the trim was black again. Ready to be treated with BW.

Had several people bring me their MINIs that they had tried everything to get the wax off without success and were blown away by the precleaner.

Though it's not set it stone, it's currently called PW or Pre Wow.

Also, while I don't have all the test results yet, current testing seems to show that PW is excellent for Cosmoline as well. I removed some severe drips/stains off the arches of a MINI at MOTD--though there seemed to be a drip impression in the plastic where the Cosmoline had run--the stains were gone.

I'm hoping in the next month or so I'll be able to send out some samples to those that want to help test it. Don't PM me yet though--I will post a signup link later.

Ooh, that precleaner sounds nice. I think the dealer must have gotten some wax on my roof trim. It's got some random faint white staining in various spots. Any I know it's not from me, as I haven't waxed it yet. (Bad Modnar, bad!)

OG you can send me some.

i don't think i'd paint the trim. lot of prep work and wouldn't it look nasty if you didn't do it right and it started to flake? those areas take a lot of hits...

the forever black looks like it would dye it real well though.

if it was THAT bad i would probably just start replacing the trim little by little and start fresh. the trim pieces are pretty cheap through pelican. the most expensive pieces will be you side skirting but, not too bad. you KNOW you're an OCD detailer when you start replacing trim pieces i just replaced my side marker vents and cowl vent grills ...

The dyes are nasty--they get on your clothing and they don't apply evenly on the trim...I saw some painted trim at MOTD that wasn't sanded and filled--was just primed and painted--texture still visible and a rock chip showed the paint flaking away from the black plastic underneath. Although I don't think Ken was talking about painting it for smooth body matched trim--but to just make it black again.

i'm probably going to sound really stupid, but... the discoloration of the trim is actually just old wax?
