PC, Pads & Paint Transfer

I am getting ready for my foray into PC land and before working on Kirly I will be experimenting on my VW Cabrio (red) and bf's Wrangler (dark blue).

I will be washing the pads between uses but is there any danger of paint transfer? Should I get a dedicated set of pads my PW beauty?

Nah... you won't transfer paint with the PC... just wash the pads well...

yah, the only time you should get a new pad is when you dedicate
a pad for each polish type.

and also use separate pads for polymer wax and carnauba wax.

goodluck with your first pc!

Griot's Microfiber Cleaner

this stuff is awesome! a few squirts into your pads, agitate
under warm running water. maybe 2-3 times and done.

Thank you for the reassurance - now I am off to search Griot's Microfiber Cleaner. I am going to need to build an addition to the garage just to store my detailing supplies...

Everyone has made the same assumption, and that's that your VW and Wrangler all have clearcoat. If that's true--then yes, there won't be any paint transfer--but if the cars came from the factory without a clear coat or they were repainted and didn't have a clear coat, then it's conceivable that you will have paint on your pads when you buff. There are many modern cars, including Mitsubishi's and Lexus that still paint with either a tinted clearcoat or single stage paints--meaning no clear coat.

If you polish a single stage finish with a PC, your pads will turn the same color as the paint, but it's probably not likely in your situation if these are all post year 2000 models. You will find out soon enough once you start polishing.

Swirl rinses out of the orange and white pads with ease.
Amigo rinses out of the white pad with a bit more effort and some soap.
I prefer to have dedicated Amigo and Swirl pads.

Note that if your paint did turn the color of your paint, it will be permanently stained, though you don't have to worry about it transferring to the car you are working on--I still feel uneasy grinding a colored pad into some drastically lighter colored paint.

Richard

So that was a very expert & professional way of saying, "Nah... you won't transfer paint with the PC... just wash the pads well..."

See why we all worship Richard? We're not worthy.
