Mothers PowerBall 4Paint

What do you all OCD detailers think of this product? http://www.mothers.com/products/prod...ower_prod.html

It's basically their metal/plastic polishing ball for paint. Right now I'm too po' to afford a random orbital machine (but I'm planning to get a Playstation 3 later this year ).

One advantage I see is, if you use a cordless drill you don't have to worry about tripping over the cord or accidently dragging the cord over the paint.

I doubt it is too effective but it looks easy - heck Chip Foose is using it so you know it has to be easy and just for show.
It also scares me more then just a little. I'd say keep your money in your pocket until you can buy a real tool.

First, I don't trip over cords, when working I keep them over my shoulder. Second, a drill has one action, rotation, no orbital motion, so it seems to me they are relying on the flapping action to try and make it random, not a good enough option IMO. Another thing is with using a cordless tool of any kind, in particular when used constantly, is the battery will lose power fast, reducing the speed, which is not a good thing.

Stick to doing it by hand till you can afford the real thing. The potential to do damage is just not worth it.

Unless Foose will come and fix it himself, which I don't think will happen This endorsement is nothing more than him getting a check every month

My initial reaction is fear too... in that I wonder how it won't scratch with its single motion function.

At the same time, I cannot see a giant like Mother's selling something that will scratch. A company like that has a full team of risk management specialists and I can't see them allowing something high risk.

I strongly doubt that it can do any paint correction (ie, swirl removal).

So, my guess is that it could be used as an application tool perhaps but not a correction tool. There may be a scratch risk but I would wonder more if it's at all effective at paint prep/correction/etc.

I'm always curious of new things though! If anyone tries it, let us know what you think. One of these days we'll try to give it a go and post results. (that is, one day when we have time.... hmmm... come to think of it I don't know when we'll get to it anytime soon!)

anyone think about using it to clean the brake dust off the wheels? i have the crown spokes and the big one would just fit inbetween them and could work well.

In terms of getting the backs? Or just getting in between the spokes?

I would think some wheel cleaner and a brush would be just as effective and less of a PITA...rather than having to mess with a drill, having another product to clean, etc.

I don't know though; if you decide to try it out, let us know how it goes!

They make a smaller one just for that (wheels), right? It's a smaller flappy foamy ball. I keep looking at it and thinking it'd be cool for lazy me, but for cheap me, the $20 just isn't worth it when a brush'll do the same thing.

i almost bought it tonight but then i remembered a friend has it and i'll ask him later if its any good, i thought the same thing tonight at walmart Misslindsey and bought a nice brush for like $2, for $28 bucks tonight i got microfiber sponge and mitt for cleaning and refills for my Mr.clean spray and wash and a tool box to keep it all in. the power ball would have added $20, so ill have to find out if its really worth it. oh and btw Misslindsey love the Hammer and Coop lightning bolts

Hehe, thanks. I loves my Lewis. The side 'bolts are beginning to look a little worse for wear, I need to see if I can clay them back to life today.

BTW - I formed an opinion of the Mr. Clean thing yesterday. What a waste. I appreciate that it may work for some, but damn... our water is so hard that it's not even worth it. It takes so long to rinse going through the filter that by the time I was halfway through (with a MINI ffs) the bonnet was dry and majorly water spotted. And this was the second time I used it. I even filled my wash bucket inside with softened water. I'm better off just speed washing, hosing, shamois-ing, and drying.

sorry hear it didnt work to well for you misslindsey, i just washed my Mini this morning with it and it came out great, but hearing it might be down to the water hardness i guess theres nothing you could do about it, but i do have to say it does work nicely when it works at all.

Yeah it works for me, but my water also goes through a softener so it's not too bad to start with.
