ok, so this silliness actually occupies my mind fairly often, when I'm particularly contemplative... :

For those of you living in NYC... where do you wash your cars? I suppose this is relevant for anyone living in an apartment within a large city, and not limited to New York... I live a stones throw outside of Pittsburgh in a house and when we were in our apartment I just went to my grandmothers. But if you live in an apartment and don't know anyone with a house, how do you do it? Those do-it-youself bays (at least, all the ones I've been to) always frown on hand washing and I'm sure I'd get booted if I tried to do a legitimate cleaning/waxing job.

It's become the 8th wonder of the modern world to me...

Toast:

I live in an apartment in Brooklyn, USA and have no driveway, or indoor parking garage. Using the handy Brooklyn Yellow Pages, I looked up 'car washing' and specifically looked for "hand washing". Ther were two establishments a short drive from my neighborhood; across the street from one another!

^^ Thanks

So I take that to mean "others" are washing your car? Don't you get jealous? I would...

I live in Manhattan, and have a spot in an indoor garage. I get grief from the guys every time I go to pick up my car as it is always laden with about a quarter inch of exhaust fumes. I would feel worse, except for the Bentley across the way that doesn't look like it has been take out this year.

I don't wash the car in the city. I visit my parents enough (in Ohio) to take care of it then, given my infrequent driving. I aim to try out the box of Zaino's just arrive this weekend. On the flip side, given road dust and salt, I am not about a self washer, as tender as I can.

I go to one of the self-wash bays, and while I'm using the soap cycle, I go over the whole car quickly with a wash mitt, which removes all but the most stubborn bugs and tar. I think there is a sign saying "no bucket washing," but first of all I'm not using a bucket, and second of all, it takes me less time to wash the MINI this way than it takes for someone to wash a large SUV just using the soap and water.

I do have a friend in Boston with a driveway and a backyard, but his hose has almost no water pressure.
