MINI at sunset, where is your favorite place in our area (Greater DC Metro).

In DC metro area, where do you think is the best place to park our MINI and watch the sunset.

I love the Tidal Basin lot (across from Thomas Jefferson Memorial). I love to see the golden color of late afternoon light paints the Jefferson Memorial, especially in mid Fall.

Across the street from our house is a little "park" that sits on the water with a bench and all... its perfect for sunsets but also nice for star gazing and the last eclipse.... its next to Herington Harbor shares the same view... i like it so much im getting married at the Harbor
The only thing is its really to close to the house to justify driving....

I have no idea where to go for a sunset around here. I am spoiled though. Living in both So. CA and FL, I have seen my share of nice sun rises/sets. I have also seen the sunrise from Cadillac Mtn in Bar Harbour ME. Actually, I do recall working at a golf course in Ellicott City and watching the sun rise every morning while eating breakfast on the highest point of the course.

Is the golf course Timber at Troy?

Nice view from the club house though.

But different location will give you different feels. Even the same location but on different occation/seasons, etc.

Turf Valley Resort and Conference Center. That was when it was 3 18 hole courses. It is now 2.

Ah, I see.

When I play I love to have a first tee time in early spring, a little bit before the sun goes up. Fog and dew still cover the groud.

What a beautiful scenery.

The top of Sugarloaf Mountain, looking west, is hands down, the very best.

something about Bull Run Mt and Mt Weather....that ridge is good background for sunsets. Working in Herndon for so many years and driving home to Leesburg, it was hard to beat the view on the way home. I get to look at Sugarloaf from my deck

Actually, River View Park just before you get to Mt Vernon on the GW Parkway. Cruising the southern part of the GW down here at twilight with the top down is high quality motoring. Most of you that came to the cookout passed it just before getting here. Depending on the time of year the sun sets on the river or just to the right behind the trees at Mt Vernon. When you have a really colorful sunset it's awesome reflected on the water. That said my fav local sunsets I'm afraid involve parking The MINI and watching them from ON the water under sail. That's tops in my book.

I was going to name the same park but on the Va side. I like the down town idea, maybe I will take my camera to work today. I get off at 6 pm should put me there around 630. Good time for the light. I do not know what the weather is going to be though.

Pinnacle-Holtwood overlook in PA. It's a HUGE bluff overhanging the Susquehanna River, if you hike down this one trail you can climb out onto these huge rocks and you just see mountains all around you, the river farrrrrrr below (boats look like toys) and birds of prey doing their thing. It faces west so there's an awesome sunset.

I used to study up there during college, even took a few naps on the rocks. And the drive is half the fun, total back-woods twisty turny mountain roads. Can't wait to take my Mini there.

Edit: Eye reed gud! Places in our area, duh! I actually haven't found any since I've lived down here. Just missing Pinnacle a lot. :(

My favorite place used to be over a farm along Glen Road in MD out by my parents house when I would be coming home from practice in high school. But then the farm was sold to developers that build big houses on small lots and crammed as many of them in as they could. Now you can't even see through the houses to see the sun setting. Now I have a friend in Tampa, FL so I guess my favorite place now is sunset sailing on the Tampa Bay.

I think I found another location today.

I got into a traffic jam on 14th street bridge south bound this evening. The sunset was soooooooo beautiful from up there.

Another shot is morning departing Washington on the Memorial Bridge. Lee's home really picks up the light. A little tough to do now because the sun comes up so late in the morning (0600ish) there is a lot of traffic there already. My thought, have someone on the Lincoln Memorial grounds shooting the MINI with longish glass. Don't know if it would all fit in though.

Tuesday I did take some shots. I shot in RAW using my d70 and have not finished playing with the pictures yet. The location was not the best but I got a late start. After shooting I did notice a spot that may be nice and have the water in the back ground.

There is a paddle boat marina off the Tidal Basen. This time of year on a week day sunset the parking lot is almost empty. The apporach after work could be tricky because it is on Independence AV. Because of rush hour traffic I would come down 15th go by the Jefferson Memorial around to the FDR Memorial parking and onto Independence.

I was going to try getting there from 12th St (exiting the city) onto Main Av but I am not sure there is a place to turn to get into the park - there might be one during normal hours but rush hour could be another story.

Maxicooper,
and now the world knows... Sorry but not so sorry.

Everyone,
I will be posting a link soon of the pictures and will look forward to help. I am not to happy with the pics in terms of composition, but will be looking for comments on elements, sky, noise, forground and the like and how to correct what is wrong. When I post the link I will post the shooting info.

The pictures of a friends truck seem somewhat grainey. Is this the noise I hear about with the D70 pushed to ISO 1000 or better? The MINI pictures were taken with a SB800 using a bounce flash off the internal card and maybe the ground (with little effect). I have read a little about layering. Comments? The Washington momument was taken on the fly while at a stop light - cause I could. You should be able to look at the full size picture and link to the photo for comments that may be helpful to others here. You should be able to make comments on the picture at the website. John
