Sorry - I should have mentioned. I currently drive an '06S, with six speed manual. Which, by the way, you can see in the market place. A bad left knee is forcing me into an automatic.

03 MCS with Alta CAI and Alta Sportone Exhaust (ECU reset afterwards)

I average 30mpg, but that is mostly country roads. I can get 34-36mpg at 50-60mph. I have gotten 6mpg at an autocross also .

I would never put anything but premium in my Mini. Lower octane gas can combust early due to the high pressure in the engine. That is not good. At 24 cents more per gallon, on one fillup per week, approx. 12 gallons per fill, and 52 weeks in a year, you are only spending $150 more by using premium. Worth it in my opinion.

I am looking at a 2006 Cooper S loaded...what type of fuel economy will I expect? its a 6 speed manual, and I read something about Minis in california (where I live) getting crappy mileage even using premium here because the premium fuel here "sucks".......?

southern cal is a little bit hilly so its not all flat..IF i drive (semi) nicely, what type of MPG will I be getting? Also, is it a NECESSITY to use premium gas? The lady at the dealer told me the S I was driving was running on 87 and that they do just fine..hmmmmm.

also, anything else I should look into at this 06 before I buy it? its a slammin deal....24k miles, $15,500...english seats, chronopackage, sport package, premium package, xenon headlights, auto AC, multifunction steering wheel etc etc etc.....still has factory warranty on it. oh, does anyone know what the factory warranty covers and how long it lasts for? Also, once the warranty is up can I take it into a Pep Boys or some other auto place to get repairs done? I don't feel like spending out the roof at the beamer dealer here to get it fixed if I can go somewhere else....

I know I have a lot of questions, but thanks !!
Also an OC'er here...

That's an excellent price. Make sure you get a Carfax and maintenance history.

I bought my '06 Cooper S Convertible in March and have been averaging 26.4 MPG (40/60 Hwy/City) over the last 4000mi. IMO, this is decent gas mileage, not excellent. My 3000 pounds, New Beetle 1.8T with 209 hp / 225 lb-ft and a 4sp Automatic gets 25.5 MPG. My Mini is 200 pounds lighter with a 6sp manual should be getting 28-29 MPG with the same driving routes.

The engine programming on the Mini doesn't pull sufficient timing to completely prevent knocking. So if you use less than 91 octane gas, you should drive like grandma on sedatives. I've used 89 before and it's okay as long as I don't stand on the pedal.

As for maintenance, there's an independent Mini mech in LA (Mini Corsa) if you want to keep away from the dealer.

The Factory Powertrain Warranty is 4yrs/50k counting down on the original date of purchase.

I don't get on the freeway due to a short commute so I see 20 mpg as an average.

i do about 50/50 city/highway and i normally get 23-27 mpg. however, i have heavy foot.

NW Houston, US-290 West going towards College Station. Always going in opposite direction with the downtown commuters so never met any traffic.

I makes use of the midrange torque alot which happens between 1800-2100 rpm. that helps me get to speed quick and saves gas too. I average about 26-27 mpg if i drive on city on S-mode so not much different between city and highway. But if I left it in D mode. I get worse mpg, abt 23-24 ave because the auto shift at higher rpm abt 2500 rpm which i think is the right rpm you should shift and I think everybody shifts at that rpm. but i dont do that.
