Hi, I am still new to this mini world, having said that I am starting to run into a few incidences. For now I will only talk about this one.
Last weekend, the family and I recently took our newly acquired 06 MCS to Zion/Bryce canyon, North of Las Vegas. On the way to and from the I-15 passes thru the an area of very fast set stretch of street legal racing strips (I love taking my Yamaha thru there). When I got the MCS up to about 110mph I start to hear the speedo wind out (possibly). It happened twice, once on the way and of course on the way back.
Any thoughts cause Google searching has resulted like those new Bing commericals.
BTW, I have been frequenting this forum lately and I very impressed on the format and participation.

What do you mean by "wind out" the speedo? Seems like you might be referring to a speedo cable but the MINI doesn't have one (speedo is all electronic). What is the sound you hear?
Yeah not quite sure what sound it is, especially at 110. Once I heard it, I slowed down and it went away.
I wasn't aware of whether or not it was cable, thanks for the insight. But the sound, sounds like a cable slipping, I'm pretty sure it came from the center console but I could be wrong. (We need to invent an "insert sound effect button")
For obvious reasons its not something I can replicate, to often.
I was just hoping somebody exprerience it as well.
I'm not losing sleep over it, but knowing what it is would be pretty cool.
This portion of the track seems to be built for it. This is well North of Las Vegas. I have traveled the same track numerous times on my bike, at about the same speeds.
I should really invest in a (inappropriate) huh?

5. LEGAL
Posts relating to street racing, excessive speeding, or violations of other laws are prohibited. If you want to race, take it to a legal venue.
This thread title led me to believe you were dealing with a different speedo issue...

Anyone tried doing a test of putting a strip of tape on the windshield side of the A-pillers black plastic covers to see if that has any effect on the noise in question. If it did, then a bead of black silicone sealer under the leading edge of the offending part should solve the problem.
I would do this experiment myself, but I an not inclined to drive fast enough to do the test anymore.
Other than posting excessive speed comments in the forum, the OPs original question is about the wind sound made at speed.
This has been an issue in the later models 07-08. I suspect for an 06, it has been discussed at length in some of the NAM threads, search button perhaps?
If the sound was a fluttery wind noise, I agree with the other posters, very possible it is wind going under the a-pillars or up under the chrome strip at the top of the windshield.
Seal the area with a bead of clear silicone, available at better auto parts stores.
If the MINI is a recent dealer purchase, they might do a check and seal under warranty or as a courtesy.
Take care.

What exactly does a cable slipping even sound like? Even if i ever did hear this sound i doubt i would think cable slipping, that what that sound is.....
And i approve of your aggressive, exciting, and sporty driving, what kinda bike do u have?

As far as the sound goes I know its kind of hard to grasp, without being there. I have searched, but once again its kind of hard to search for sound, I always get the craziest results.
I say cable slipping merely as a descriptor. Lets just it was cable driven and for some reason the speedometer maxes out at 110, but the cable continues to spin but the speedo stops. Make any sense?
It could have came from the tac, or it could have been this A Pillar thing, either way I am hoping that I'm not the only one.
Once again thanks again for the responses and making a newcomer feel welcome.
I've gotten a loud, high freq buzzing from the center console of my '05 MC at highway speeds when driving into a strong head wind. ( 40+ mph or so for a combined wind speed of 120 ) I had my significant other co-pilot look and listen around the dash and she spotted the wiper blades vibrating very fast and making the buzzing noise. Just a thought.

Interesting, I am huge fan of the Bosch wipers, I have looked to see if they are made for Minis. I'll have to Google it. Doesn't rain to much in Vegas. :-)
