Cooper to Cooper S

Is it possible to add a supercharger/turbo to a Cooper and basically make it an S? Will the engine accept it? I know you need other things, intercooler etc. But would it work? I am installing a new intake and will be doing a new exhaust within 6 months so I figure I should supercharge it as well.

Thanks!

No, you cannot just attach the S supercharger to the non S Cooper due to hood & hardware clearance. Talk to Mynes Performance as they have a Garret turbo that can be boosted low pressure of 6 psi for the Cooper. More boost pressure will be too much for the stock internals as they are not made of forged metal as the S. Again, talk to the experts.

Don't bother doing this. For the cost you can sell your cooper and buy an S. The Cooper bottom end isn't as strong as the S and you'll end up breaking it.

It's possible to just do an engine swap to an S motor but since you'll need everything from the ignition to the ECU to the door handles (or carry 2 keys), and pretty much every other part from your donor S, you would have been better off just buying a S.

IF I blow my motor (somehow) and IF I could find a solid donor S (with rear end frame damage or something) then MAYBE id try this.

Ed, you are correct, we can indeed perform this conversion... I'm sure you got that from reading our forum.

OP: Yes, we can convert your non-S computer to run as the S... you'll need to do a couple of engine mods to support this, of course.
- stronger internals
- 6 speed tranny swap
- new MAP sensor.

We have done this to a customer car (Turbo Cooper R52 with built motor, etc)... tuning will be performed once the guys get back from their UK trip.

cheers.
mike
