This weekend, I filled my gas tank with 13.8 gallons ($57) and the trip computer still showed 15 miles. I thought the gas tank was only 13.2 gallons. Do they mean imperial gallons?
one is error on the OBC... This has been seen by many.
two is error in the calibration of the pump.... This too has been seen.
three is filling stuff other than the tank.... And there's some capacity here as well.
I have checked my gas mileage twice and this is the result:
Miles Traveled Miles left Average(based on fillup and miles traveled)
540 85 36+
485 48 36.5 (filled up with 13.3 gal)
Either my fuel tank is larger than 13.2 or the oddometer is wrong or I'm really getting over 36 MPG
In both cases I was trying to conserve fuel (mostly freeway 60+ MPH). However I live in Oakhurst and both trials resulted in my having to go down from and up to Oakhurst multiple times. Up and down results in less MPG than just driving in flat land. I can't belive the fuel pump is off more than a gallon when I fill it up here in Oakhurst.
I routinely have to fill up my gas tank over 13.5 gallons. I think the 'real' capacity is like 14 gallons but they use the extra .8 gallons as reserve fuel space.
If I'm trying to get MPG I usually run between 2000-3000 RPM, I shift when I get to 3000 RPM, and I don't rabbit start. I do enjoy the car and will feel the acceleration and run the RPMs up so don't think I drive slow all the time. But sometimes when I know that I will be traveling a long distance I will see how well I can do in MPG. I have a little over 10,000 miles on the car and my aveage MPG since I bought it is 34.3 MPG. The window sticker said that I could get 34 MPG on the highway so I don't know why I'm getting such good mileage. I have a 2008 Cooper S hardtop.
