Suspension help.

Ok guys and gals I just recieved my suspension springs to replace the worn out rubber cones. Is there a how too guide somewhere? the main issue I see right now is with the rear. I see nowhere to insert the compression tool, seems like the rear role pan is in the way. Any help will be appreciated.

Eric

Jiveturkey -

You should not need to compress the cones in the rear - in fact I don't think there is a place to do it anyway. Once you release the shock from the radius arm it should pivot down such that the knuckle joint ball moves back away from the cone until you can pull the trumpet out of the cone and everything comes right out.

As you go back in you will have to support the radius arm from below as you pivot it back up until the shock is back on it to hold it up. I remember the knuckle joint ball popping out until I had everything in place due to the additional weight of the arm with the brakes on it. Its been a few months since I put the rear end in, but this is what I remember.

The coils just fit in like the cone on reassembly. Are you putting in hilo's as an ride height adjustment with the coils? Or are you just putting in the coils. With hilos you can drop the length to its minimum for easier installation.

Haynes manual is a pretty good guide....

Good Luck!

Agreed... You have one of these, right? It goes through the removal pretty thoroughly, front and back.

Thanks Okmini. I decided shortly after that post yesterday that I would wait on my manual to arrive. However, I might try it today since I don't have to compress the rear. Thanks for info!!

You will likely find that you will want to remove the upper front suspension arms in order to facilitate the removal of the old cones. Can they be removed without taking out the top arms? Mmm. Sometimes, yes. Will it take longer to pry them out than it would to remove the top arm? Often times, yes.

I concur that it Can be done without removing the upper arm, although I'd aslo say that I Will remove the arm, when I have to do it again! What a PITB!!!
