I know we are in the capital area but do we really have to show the Capitol or in that matter any monument?

It's not bad. If the capital had to stay I'd use it instead of the 'A' or something. Would something circular make sense as it might be nice to eventually put it on a magnetic badge or something?

Capital area MD, DC, VA for the number 3
as for the hexes I see them as building blocks, parts that are fitted together.
