Ok, well -40 is nuts. It's only -27 here in Calgary, and yes the winter tires are a great addition! My MINI is in the Garage, so should be good to go :D
-33 here in E-town, my MINI is safely tucked in the garage...
It runs like a champ in this weather, however, the squeaks, rattles and groans say it's not too happy about it. And the crashing over rail tracks... it just sounds nasty.
Frozen batteries that cant throw out enough to get the engine going.
would be nice to have a block heater but i doubt Big corporations like the idea of something that reduces wear and extends the life of a car in canada. when they want you to be replacing every 7 years max. Things just are not made like they used to be ....
and at -45C overnight a battery blanket isn't going to last and keep that battery warm for long.
WTB a garrage!!

I could see getting a battery warmer a good thing (an electric battery blanket). That would ensure the battery has the ability to turn over the engine. After all, it doesn't matter if the engine block is warm, if the battery is dead.
With the use of synthetic oils in the car, the oil doesn't thicken up like they used to, so warming up the oil doesn't help as much to get the car running.
