Queen Wilhelmina run !!

Our September event is a run to Queen Wilhelmina over into OK and back and includes the Talimena Skyway. This looks like a great run! I emailed all our Klub members the maps.

Mena AMOK Run
September 27, 2008

From Little Rock: Travel west to Hot Springs; from Hot Springs travel highway 270 to Pencil Bluff. At Pencil Bluff take highway 88 to Mena.

From Fort Smith: Travel U S highway 71 south, approx. 75 miles

We will meet at Wendy’s/Exxon at 10:30 a.m. From Wendy’s we will travel 1 mile; turn right onto highway 88 west. We will travel the 12 miles to the Queen Wilhelmina State park where we will have lunch. There is a miniature train there on the mountain that costs $3.50/person to ride. I have fond childhood memories of riding this train so I highly advise the ride!

From there we will travel on highway 88 to Oklahoma 1 to Big Cedar Oklahoma and the memorial where president J F Kennedy dedicated highway 259 in 1961.

From Big Cedar we will travel highway 259 south over the Kiamichi Mountain. We will stop at the Three Sticks monument that is legend to have been dedicated the JFK (look up Three Sticks in the Wind) the three sticks are to signify Land, Water and Wind. From here we will travel to Smithville, Oklahoma.

At Smithville we will turn left onto Highway 4 and travel back into Arkansas to the small town of Cove. At Cove we will turn left on U S 71 and travel north back to Mena.

This will be a full day. I would like to have dinner at Papa Poblanos Mexican Café the have a variety of authentic Mexican cuisine.

There are lots of photo ops along the way so everyone should bring their camera. I also encourage you to bring radios so we can keep up. I don’t promise a lot of cell service in these mountains so the radios are a must. I have 4 incase someone doesn’t one. I will have door prizes from the area. I have included some web sites so you can look up the area.

Those of you who came last year you have already traveled part of this route so pass along how beautiful this run is.
René

Central Arkansas Meeting Place

I am trying to get all central Arkansas participants together to go to Hot Springs to meet Popeye on Saturday morning. As soon as I get the final time tables, I will post and e-mail the particulars to those who are in my address book.

We really need to participate in this run. Not only is it going to be a great day, but the run will be awesome.

If you are planning to go, please post here so I can get you the info as it comes in.

Popeye says we should be in Hot Springs by no later than 9:00 am. I am planning on being at the K-Mart parking lot on Rodney Parham by 7:30. I am hoping everyone who wants to go will be there by 8:00. It will take us just under an hour to get to the Wal Mart in Hot Springs on 270.

All central Arkansas AMOKs please come if you can.
